Alexander Zverev reached the French Open quarterfinals with a straight-sets win over Jesper de Jong on Court Philippe Chatrier, 7-6(3), 6-3, 6-1.
World No. 106 Jesper de Jong was this year’s shock story at Roland Garros. The Dutch “lucky loser” beat Stan Wawrinka and Federico Cina, then stunned 15th seed Karen Khachanov in five sets in round three.
Zverev is the top seed left in the draw. He reached the fourth round without much trouble, dropping only one set across wins over Benjamin Bonzi, Tomas Machac and Quentin Halys.
The crowd sang happy birthday to De Jong when the match began, celebrating his 26th. The Dutchman responded with a strong service game and took an early lead against the big favourite Zverev. He broke the tournament favourite early too, staying composed to surge 3-0 up in just 12 minutes.
Zverev hit back and broke De Jong to love, closing to within one game. This was De Jong’s first win over a top-15 player just last Friday. The Dutchman then broke back to level, and saved two late break points in the opening set to stay one game from taking it.
Neither player gave an inch and it went to a tiebreak. De Jong started fast with quick breaks to lead, but Zverev turned it around. A perfect passing shot plus a De Jong error wiped out the three-point gap. A double fault and an overhit forehand from De Jong then gave Zverev a 6-3 edge, and he took the set by winning seven points in a row.

Zverev Takes Control
Zverev tightened up and proved why he’s the man to beat at Roland Garros. The German cut out mistakes, making 12 fewer unforced errors than De Jong. His serve was dominant too - he won 20 of 24 points on it and sealed the set with a break in game 10.
De Jong fell apart from there and Zverev ran away with it. Looking to finish quickly, Zverev delivered his sixth love game and outscored the Dutchman 16-1 across four and a half games.
Zverev never let up and kept control through the final set, dropping just one game on his way to a 6-1 finish. It’s now six straight years Zverev has made the French Open quarterfinals. Next up he faces teenage breakout Rafael Jodar, who’s playing his first Grand Slam quarterfinal.

De Jong still has plenty to celebrate. The Dutchman is set for a big jump in the ATP rankings, climbing from No. 106 up to No. 81.
