Wembanyama Wins NBA Defensive Player of the Year by Unanimous Vote

Wembanyama becomes first unanimous NBA defensive player of the year

Victor Wembanyama wins Defensive Player of the Year unanimously, becomes youngest recipient. Fourth Spur to win award after Leonard, Robinson.

Wembanyama collects second major award in three seasons with unanimous DPOY. Finished second to Gobert last year, now makes NBA history...

Victor Wembanyama became the first player in NBA history to win the Defensive Player of the Year award by unanimous vote Monday.

Last year, Wembanyama appeared poised to win Defensive Player of the Year in his second NBA season, but a post-All-Star Game injury ended his campaign and made him ineligible under the 65-game rule.

This time, it was hard to see how he would miss out on the trophy.

Named a finalist with Chet Holmgren of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Ausar Thompson of the Detroit Pistons, he entered as the overwhelming favorite.

He won as expected, becoming the first unanimous recipient and the youngest winner ever at 22 years old.

Another Milestone for Wembanyama

Wembanyama picked up his second major individual award in just his third NBA season. He won 2024 Rookie of the Year, also by unanimous vote. That same year he placed second in Defensive Player of the Year voting to fellow Frenchman Rudy Gobert, whose fourth DPOY tied Dikembe Mutombo and Ben Wallace for the record. That mark now looks within reach for Wembanyama.

He’s the fourth Spur to earn Defensive Player of the Year, following Alvin Robertson, David Robinson, and Kawhi Leonard. Leonard remains the only one to win it twice. Maybe Wembanyama joins him next year.

But above all, is this just the start of a trophy run for Wembanyama?

He was also named a finalist for Most Valuable Player last night, joining reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and three-time MVP Nikola Jokic.

Gilgeous-Alexander is expected to win back-to-back MVPs, but Wembanyama drew major buzz at the end of the season.

So, maybe it is just the beginning.
