Rayo Vallecano took a narrow first-leg lead in their UEFA Conference League semifinal against Strasbourg, with Alemao’s second-half header securing a crucial 1-0 win at Estadio de Vallecas.
With both clubs playing in their first major European semifinal, the opening stages were predictably tight in Madrid.
Ben Chilwell sent a speculative long-range shot over for the visitors, while Alemao couldn’t keep a decent headed chance on target at the other end.
Strasbourg tried to push forward, with Gary O’Neil’s side getting plenty of the ball in the final third, but Rayo stayed solid defensively. They had kept first-half clean sheets in five of their six European home games this season.
Backed by that defensive stability, Los Franjirrojos looked for an opener themselves, with left-back Pep Chavarria dragging a low shot just wide of the far post.
That was Rayo’s best chance of the half. Strasbourg had one of their own right before halftime when captain Emmanuel Emegha volleyed over from 12 yards.
Beaten just twice at home since early October (W10, D7), Rayo started the second half fast. Their pressure paid off in the 54th minute with the opener.
Isi Palazon’s outswinging corner found Alemao, who guided a brilliant glancing header into the far corner past Mike Penders for his third goal of this year’s competition.

Looking to extend their lead, the hosts kept control of the match. Florian Lejeune’s header was well saved by Penders before Ilias Akhomach fired a low shot just wide.
Strasbourg threatened briefly when Andrew Omobamidele couldn’t convert from close range. But the visitors relied on Penders again moments later, as the Chelsea loanee denied Lejeune’s free header.
That was the last real chance of the match. Le Racing held on to prevent further damage, setting up an intriguing second leg in France next week with a place in the final at stake.
