Tiger Woods is taking a break from golf to focus on his health and seek treatment after being arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) in Florida. He was involved in a car crash near his Jupiter Island home last Friday, where his SUV rolled over after hitting a trailer being pulled by a pickup truck.
In a statement, Woods said, “I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.” He also mentioned he's committed to taking the time needed to return to a healthier and stronger place, both personally and professionally.
The PGA Tour has expressed support for Woods, stating, “Tiger Woods is a legend of our sport whose impact extends far beyond his achievements on the course. But above all else, Tiger is a person, and our focus is on his health and well-being.”
A 15-time major champion is facing DUI charges after being assessed as impaired by officers. He had opioid painkillers with him but pleaded not guilty, claiming he was looking at his phone and changing radio channels at the time.

Woods had undergone seven back surgeries and over 20 operations on his right leg, which may have contributed to his condition.
Police found two hydrocodone pills, an opioid painkiller, in Woods' pocket, and he appeared unable to safely drive a vehicle when apprehended. Woods admitted to taking prescription medication earlier that morning but denied consuming alcohol.
Asked about his medical condition, the report said, “Woods advised he's had seven back surgeries and over 20 operations on his leg... Woods advised he has a limp and his ankle seizes while walking.”
Tiger Woods suffered severe injuries in a 2021 California crash, undergoing emergency surgery for multiple compound fractures in his right leg and a shattered ankle. He made a remarkable return to competition at the 2022 Masters, finishing 47th despite struggling to walk 72 holes at Augusta National.
Woods is set to attend the Champions Dinner at Augusta National next week, ahead of the 90th Masters. Given his current situation, it's unclear if he'll participate in the tournament.
Tiger Woods hasn't played in a top-level golf event since the 2024 British Open. He's been dealing with some health issues, including a ruptured left Achilles tendon in March 2025 and back surgery last October. Despite these setbacks, Woods recently participated in a TGL simulator indoor golf event, sparking hopes of a possible return to the Masters.

Woods had expressed optimism about playing at the Masters, but unfortunately, he'll be missing this year's tournament. He released a statement saying he's stepping away to focus on his health and seeking treatment.
“I'm committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally,” wrote Woods on Tuesday.
“I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time.”
