AC Milan scraped a 1-0 win at Verona through Rabiot to climb to second in Serie A, earning an 11th straight H2H win over the Gialloblu...

AC Milan scraped a 1-0 win over bottom-placed Hellas Verona at the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi. The result lifted the Rossoneri into second in Serie A and left Verona still staring at relegation.

Milan looked sluggish early against a struggling Verona side. They played like a team still feeling the effects of three losses in four games, including a 3-0 home defeat to Udinese last time out.

Milan fans had to wait until the 32nd minute for the game’s first shot on target, when Adrien Rabiot fired a tame effort right at Lorenzo Montipò.

Rabiot was far more clinical with his next chance late in the first half.

Breaking from deep, the midfielder latched onto Rafael Leão’s perfectly weighted through ball and calmly finished past the charging keeper.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side still needed Mike Maignan to step up before halftime. The keeper made a key save to deny Rafik Belghali in a one-on-one and keep Verona behind at the break.

Down at the break, Verona interim boss Paolo Sammarco faced a tough halftime talk. He knew his team needed a big second-half turnaround to keep their faint survival hopes alive.

Ioan Vermeșan made an immediate impact after coming on at halftime. He tried his luck twice from distance - Maignan had to get down for the first, while the second flew just wide of the far post.

With 20 minutes left, Matteo Gabbia thought he’d killed off Verona’s hopes with a close-range header, but the assistant’s flag went up for offside.

Alexis Saelemaekers had a late strike cleared off the line, but Milan didn’t need a second goal. The 1-0 win secured their 11th straight head-to-head victory over Verona and tightened their grip on a top-four spot.

Verona remain bottom of the table, now a daunting 10 points from safety with only five games remaining.
