Northern Irish star prioritises enjoyment over pressure as he defends his title...
Rory McIlroy is feeling more relaxed than ever ahead of his first Masters since winning the title last year. The Northern Irish golfer, who completed the career Grand Slam with his thrilling victory at Augusta National, says the burden that once weighed him down is finally gone.
McIlroy's mindset has undergone a significant shift, and he's no longer counting down the days until the opening tee shot. Instead, he's embracing the experience and enjoying the perks that come with being a defending champion. “I wouldn't care if the Masters never started,” he joked, highlighting just how much more at ease he feels.
With his major drought finally over, McIlroy is focusing on what's next for him in golf. He's motivated to keep pushing himself and sees the Masters as a great opportunity to add to his major tally. “I feel like I've got another 10 good shots at this,” he said, hinting at his plans to continue competing at the highest level.
“For the past 17 years I just could not wait for the tournament to start, and this year I wouldn't care if the tournament never started,” a smiling McIlroy told reporters while donning his Green Jacket.
“That's sort of the difference.”
The Northern Irishman remains hungry for more titles, saying the Masters win hasn't diminished his drive to contend again. However, it has shifted his perspective on the game, making him appreciate the experience of walking the course.
“It's completely different. I feel so much more relaxed,” he said.
“It doesn't make me any less motivated to go out there and play well and try to win the tournament, just relaxed.”
McIlroy's relaxed vibe was on full display during a laid-back press conference, where he discussed everything from his Masters win to his Masters Champions Dinner menu. As the reigning champ, he's enjoying the hosting duties, including choosing the menu for Tuesday's dinner.
“People keep asking me, 'Why didn't you go more Irish?' And I said, because I want to enjoy the dinner as well,” he said to laughter from reporters.
McIlroy believes Augusta might be his best bet to add another major title, given the experience he's built up here. With his win last year, he's gained a new level of comfort at the course, and he's looking to make the most of it.
“I think this one,” he said when asked which of the four majors best suited him going forward.
McIlroy reckons his familiarity with Augusta National gives him an edge, setting it apart from other major venues that change locations annually. He's got a deep understanding of the course, and he's leveraging that to his advantage.
“I just think that everything here is a little more predictable,” he said.
“I just think the more experience you have around this golf course, the better it is.”
New Lease on Golf
McIlroy thinks he's got “10 good shots” left at winning more Masters titles, thanks to his deep connection with Augusta National. The course's predictability and his years of experience could help him stay competitive even as he ages.
His focus is shifting, though - McIlroy's no longer driven solely by the pursuit of majors. He's embracing a new perspective, enjoying the game more, and letting his experience work for him.
“I think the story as it relates to me is what do I do from now onwards? What motivates me? What gets me going? What do I still want to achieve in the game?”
The career Grand Slam used to feel like the ultimate goal, but achieving it changed everything for McIlroy. Now, he's found a new sense of freedom and enjoyment in the game.
“I think what I've realised is, if you can just really find enjoyment in the journey, that's the big thing, because honestly I felt like the career Grand Slam was my destination, and I got there, and then I realised it wasn't the destination.”

McIlroy noticed a shift in how people talked to him around Augusta - the pressure was off, and conversations felt more relaxed.
“There's a real positive connotation to it instead of, 'Geez, Rory, we've been waiting a while. When are you going to get this done?'” he said.
For McIlroy, the biggest difference was simple: he was no longer “the guy chasing ”
“It is so nice to walk around the property or be out on the golf course and just not have that hanging over me.”
