Liverpool suffer 2-0 defeat to PSG in UCL quarter-final first leg, need a big response at Anfield...

PSG outclassed Liverpool, winning 2-0 at home in the UCL quarter-final first leg. They've now gone 8 games unbeaten in knockout UCL matches (W7, D1), a French record.

Liverpool, managed by Arne Slot, were expected to face a tough test against PSG, who've beaten English teams in their last four two-legged ties - including an 8-2 demolition of Chelsea recently.

Ultimately, any such nerves were justified when Desire Doue broke the deadlock with just 11 minutes on the clock.

Ousmane Dembele weaved his way through the Liverpool defence before teeing up his teammate and French compatriot, whose shot took a hefty deflection and looped over Giorgi Mamardashvili.

One might have expected the floodgates to open from that point, but Liverpool remained largely resolute in their defensive shape.

However, Mamardashvili was called into action to make two vital saves, denying Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Doue to keep the deficit at one heading into the break.

Liverpool created a rare chance after the break when Hugo Ekitike's shot flew over. PSG's Dembélé then squanderder a great chance to double their lead, failing to finish from a Nuno Mendes cut-back.

A second goal eventually came in the 65th minute, though, courtesy of Kvaratskhelia.

The Georgian was superbly picked out by Joao Neves and effortlessly glided his way into the box before dispatching his close-range strike past Mamardashvili.

Liverpool dodged a third goal when Konate was given a penalty for bringing down Zaire-Emery. VAR stepped in, and the spot-kick was overturned.

Luis Enrique’s side threatened to make the scoreline more convincing in the closing stages, with Dembélé rattling the outside of the post, but PSG had to settle for two goals on the night.

While Slot’s side will return to Merseyside disappointed, they remain in with a chance of snatching a semi-final berth in next week’s second leg at Anfield

This latest defeat adds to Liverpool's struggles, with five losses in their last six away games. It's a tough season for the Reds, and things aren't looking great.

PSG, on the other hand, are flying high. This win keeps their title defence on track, extending their winning streak to five games in all competitions.
