Belgian authorities crack down on Tour of Flanders riders who broke traffic rules, ignoring a red light during the race.

Pogacar, Evenepoel and 52 others face fines and bans for ignoring red light in Tour of Flanders...

The Belgian public prosecutor's office is going after 54 cyclists, including top riders Tadej Pogacar and Remco Evenepoel, for ignoring a red light at a railway crossing during the Tour of Flanders. This is considered a serious traffic offense in Belgium, classified as a fourth-degree violation under the country's traffic code.

The incident happened when a group of riders, including Pogacar and Evenepoel, crossed the railway tracks despite the red light, while the rest of the peloton stopped. The prosecution says this behavior is unacceptable and poses significant risks to both the riders and others.

If found guilty, the riders could face fines ranging from €320 to €4,000 and driving bans of up to eight days. Pogacar has already expressed his frustration, saying he wasn't given enough warning to stop and thought it might be a protest.

“Such offences pose serious risks to the safety of both riders and members of the public. That is why these offences are severely punished,” the public prosecution office said.

“All the offenders have now been identified, and a report is currently being drawn up. We wish to emphasise that such offences, even in a sporting context, are unacceptable,” the office continued.

Ignoring a red light at a railway crossing nearly always results in a fine. The fines range from €400 to €5,000.
