The Philadelphia Flyers became the third team to advance from the opening round of the Stanley Cup playoffs Wednesday, as the Montreal Canadiens moved ahead 3-2 in their series with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
One goal was all it took in Philadelphia as the Flyers edged bitter rivals Pittsburgh at home to close out the series in six games.
After five or more goals in four of the first five games, Game 6 was a total shift - just one goal scored, and it came in overtime.
The first period was frantic with 23 combined shots - 12 for Pittsburgh - but neither side found the net. Both teams had a power play in the frame and both were killed off.
More of the same followed in the second, with Philadelphia holding a 10-7 edge in shots. Pittsburgh got an early power play but couldn’t convert.
Philadelphia opened the third on a two-minute power play and came up empty again. From there, Pittsburgh needing a win to force Game 7 at home - took control, outshooting the Flyers 13-5 but unable to beat Daniel Vladar.

With 2:30 left in the first overtime, Philadelphia found the winner. Cam York’s shot from just inside the blue line hit the post and went in, sealing the series.
The Flyers advance past the first round for the first time since 2020 and will face the Carolina Hurricanes next. The Hurricanes finished first in the Eastern Conference and swept the Ottawa Senators in round one.

Outshot 40-24 on the night, Montreal still grabbed the lead back a minute into the third. Lane Hutson’s cross-ice feed found Alexandre Texier with too much space, and he buried it to quiet the Tampa crowd.
