Venus Williams loses to Kaitlin Quevedo in the opening round of the Madrid Open

20-year-old Quevedo stuns Venus Williams in straight sets at Madrid Open. The seven-time major winner drops to 0-7 for the 2026 season.

Williams 6-2, 6-4 loss to Quevedo in Madrid marks her first clay match in five years. Wind and rain couldn’t stop the Spanish wildcard...

Venus Williams exited the Madrid Open on Tuesday, with the 45-year-old losing in straight sets to Kaitlin Quevedo.

The 20-year-old Spanish wildcard defeated the seven-time Grand Slam champion 6-2, 6-4 in just under an hour and 45 minutes.

Williams, ranked 479th, has lost all seven of her matches this season. It was her first clay-court match since Roland Garros five years ago.

Every game in the first set was tight, with wind across Estadio Manolo Santana causing multiple unforced errors. But world No. 140 Quevedo, playing her first WTA 1000 event, was more consistent.

Williams started stronger in the second set and went 3-0 up before Quevedo fought back. Rain then paused play while the centre court roof was closed.

Quevedo won five straight games after the restart to close out the match and reach round two.
