Liam Rosenior: Chelsea Champions League Hopes 'Running Out'
| Time running out for Chelsea's top-five push, says Rosenior |
Liam Rosenior says Chelsea must improve fast as Champions League hopes fade. The Blues are winless in six weeks and face Man United with fan protests planned.
Liam Rosenior says Chelsea need to improve quickly, with time to secure a Champions League spot “running out...”
Liam Rosenior’s sixth-placed side face a crucial clash with Manchester United on Saturday. They have managed just one win in their last seven Premier League games, leaving their hopes of reaching Europe’s top club competition in danger.
Third-placed United visit Stamford Bridge with Chelsea seven points behind them, while fifth-placed Liverpool sit four points ahead of the Blues.
Chelsea have not scored a league goal in more than six weeks.
Rosenior’s side have just six games remaining to break into the top five, and he knows there is no time for self-pity after last weekend’s 3-0 home defeat to Manchester City.
“As the season goes on, the less games you have left, the more important the games become,” Rosenior told reporters on Thursday.
“We have to take advantage of this moment. We're running out of time.
“We need to show that initiative on Saturday and play on the front foot and make up those points, which is still definitely possible.
"If I look at each game, I think it's just come down to loss of concentration of focus in a moment that then has snowballed into the rest of the performances.
“What we have to do is manage the margins of the game a little bit better.”
A protest by Chelsea supporters is planned before the United game, showing the growing frustration since owners BlueCo took over from Roman Abramovich nearly four years ago.
If results do not improve sharply in the coming weeks, this season will be the first under the American owners that the team’s league position has declined.

Rosenior’s role is also likely to face scrutiny after a disappointing start to his tenure, which began in January when he replaced Enzo Maresca following his move from Strasbourg.
“Every supporter has their viewpoint,“ Rosenior said. “Every supporter wants their club to do well and to win games. Our job, my job, is to produce those results in the long term.”
Maresca left by mutual consent after suggesting he did not get enough backing from the owners.

Strasbourg are also owned by BlueCo, which led some fans to criticize Rosenior’s appointment and claim he would be a puppet for the board, unlike the outspoken Maresca.
