Leipzig Host Union Berlin as Bundesliga Sees Historic Firsts

Eta, Haenni break barriers as Leipzig face Union in key Bundesliga clash

Leipzig and Union Berlin meet with Europe and survival on the line. The clash spotlights the Bundesliga’s shift, with Union led by the first female coach in a major European men’s league.

Leipzig vs Union Berlin highlights Bundesliga’s shifting landscape...

RB Leipzig host Union Berlin on Friday in a Bundesliga match where both clubs are pursuing different objectives, a fixture that reflects how the league is evolving.

A win would move third-placed Leipzig closer to a Champions League return after the club missed out on European football for the first time this season.

For Union Berlin, a win would put them nine points above the relegation playoff place with three games left, virtually securing safety for another season.

Union are led by Marie-Louise Eta, the first woman to coach a men’s team in a major European league. Their opponents RB Leipzig have Tatjana Haenni as CEO, the first woman to run a club in German football history.

Leipzig and Union are the only Bundesliga clubs from former East Germany. Beyond that, they share little in common. But both appointments highlight a commitment to merit and competence, with Eta and Haenni seen as the right people for their roles.

Haenni, a former Switzerland international with 23 caps who became CEO on January 1, told AFP and other media Tuesday that Eta’s appointment shows where football and society stand today.

“It's the most popular sport on the planet. It's about quality, and it's about the right people at the right place,«she said.

“It's a cultural shift which has to happen, and it is happening. With me being here and Marie-Louise being the head coach at Union Berlin, it's just happening.

“It's about quality, expertise, trusting people and having the right mindset.”

Eta’s hiring attracted international coverage. Though the 34-year-old understands her pioneering status, she’d rather talk tactics than titles.

“It creates a responsibility for me, whether I like it or not,” Eta told Germany's Die Zeit on Wednesday.

“My primary goal was never to strengthen the role of women. I have always wanted to convince through performance. I want to be seen as a football coach.”

Bayern Munich clinched the title last week, but the relegation battle is still wide open.

Wolfsburg’s win against Union last week kept their survival hopes alive. Still second-bottom, they moved to within two points of St. Pauli, who sit on 26 points in the relegation playoff spot and travel to bottom-placed Heidenheim on Saturday.

Wolfsburg face Borussia Mönchengladbach, one of four clubs tied on 31 points.

Player Spotlight: Jackson Irvine (St Pauli)

A fan favourite in Hamburg since his 2021 arrival, St Pauli captain Jackson Irvine has been central to the club’s battle against relegation.

Since the Australian took the armband back in February, St Pauli have won three matches - matching their total from the rest of the year - and lost just three of nine games with him starting.

Speaking at a media roundtable Tuesday, St Pauli striker Abdoulie Ceesay highlighted Irvine’s influence as a leader.

“He's a very good leader. He's always there to push us. Sometimes you think he's upset with you and he screams at you, telling you bad words. But afterwards, he'll tell you he's doing it to help you, to make you better.

“He's there pushing us every single day to fight for everything and to stay in this league.”
