Joey Barton, the former Premier League star, has pleaded not guilty to assaulting a man outside a golf club in northwest England. The 43-year-old ex-Manchester City and Newcastle midfielder appeared via videolink from Liverpool prison for the plea hearing at Liverpool Crown Court.
Barton is accused of attacking Kevin Lynch, a former non-league football manager, at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club on March 8. Lynch suffered serious injuries, including possible loss of sight in one eye. Barton's co-defendant, Gary O'Grady, also appeared in court but didn't enter a plea.
The court has set a trial date for September 1, with the case expected to last seven days. Barton remains in custody, while O'Grady has been granted conditional bail.
Joey Barton pleaded not guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Kevin Lynch, 51, in Huyton, Liverpool, on March 8th. The incident occurred at Fairway, and Barton is facing charges related to the altercation.
Co-defendant Gary O'Grady, 50, from Huyton, didn't enter a plea to the charge during Tuesday's court hearing. The case will proceed with Barton's not guilty plea, and further details are expected as it unfolds.
A previous court hearing revealed the defendants had been drinking with Lynch at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club before the alleged attack took place.
Lynch, a former non-league football manager and founder of special education school NexGen Academy, reportedly suffered severe eye injuries in the incident.
