Liverpool ended a run of three defeats to Crystal Palace with a 3-1 victory. Goals from Isak, Robertson and Wirtz moved Arne Slot’s side into the top four and eight points clear of sixth.

Isak goal helps Liverpool to routine win against Palace and close in on Champions League...

Liverpool strengthened their case for UEFA Champions League qualification with a 3-1 Premier League win over Crystal Palace. Two exit-bound Reds were in the spotlight for different reasons as Liverpool avenged three straight H2H defeats this season.

Arne Slot’s side had already lost three times to Crystal Palace this season, but they started with confidence that belied that poor record.

They thought they had a penalty midway through the first half when Florian Wirtz played in Mohamed Salah, who was brought down by a last-ditch Brennan Johnson challenge.

VAR intervened and correctly spared the Eagles, with the Wales international judged to have got enough on the ball. But the breakthrough felt inevitable, and Alexander Isak eventually provided it. He controlled Alexis Mac Allister’s speculative effort and steered it past Dean Henderson.

Crystal Palace responded well, and Jean-Philippe Mateta tested Freddie Woodman at the near post after Liverpool cheaply gave the ball away. From the resulting corner, the keeper made an even better save to deny Maxence Lacroix.

The third-choice keeper soon had the Kop singing his name after the Reds struck on the break. Wirtz and Curtis Jones combined in a slick move to set up Andy Robertson for what could be his final goal for the club.

Isak nearly added a second after the break, but Jaydee Canvot tracked him all the way and did just enough to keep Oliver Glasner’s side in it. Ismaïla Sarr came close to cutting the deficit, but Virgil van Dijk did enough to stop the forward scoring his eighth career goal against Liverpool.

Palace got a lifeline in bizarre fashion soon after, with Daniel Muñoz chipping into an empty net after Woodman injured himself making a smart save from Sarr.

Fourth-choice keeper Armin Pecsi was readying himself on the bench, but Woodman managed to continue. He watched on relieved as Jørgen Strand Larsen hit the post with Palace’s last big chance to equalize.

Wirtz then settled it once and for all, capping a superb display with an excellent stoppage-time strike that flew into the far corner.

The one major downside for Slot’s side was Mohamed Salah’s injury. He was forced off with an apparent muscle problem that could bring a premature end to his legendary Anfield career.

That thought seemed to be on his mind as he applauded all four corners of the ground before leaving the pitch.

Palace have now won just one of their last 19 matches against teams who started the day in the top half of the PL table - with that lone victory ironically coming against Liverpool in September.

Meanwhile, the Reds took full advantage of Aston Villa’s lunchtime defeat. They moved up to fourth on goal difference and now hold an eight-point cushion over Brighton in sixth.
