Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona: Past success fuels Koke's motivation
Koke leads Atletico Madrid's charge against Barcelona at sold-out Metropolitano Stadium. Atletico Madrid hosts Barcelona in Champions League quarter-final second leg, seeking semi-final spot after 2-0 lead.
“When matches like this come around, you draw on those memories to fire yourself up...”
Atletico Madrid is gearing up for a crucial week, hosting Barcelona at the sold-out Metropolitano Stadium on Tuesday in the Champions League quarter-final second leg. They aim to secure their first semi-final berth in nine years, before focusing on the Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad.
Koke, the Atletico captain and academy graduate, reflected on past successes, including his 2014 goal that eliminated Barcelona, saying he's drawing motivation from those memories. “I've watched that goal quite a few times... It’s true that when these kinds of matches start coming around, you try to motivate yourself and you try to visualise a lot of positive things that happened,” he told reporters.
Atletico Madrid has a 2-0 lead from the first leg, and Koke emphasized the need for “personality” to stop Barcelona's pressure. Coach Diego Simeone is optimistic, saying “We’re fully aware of the strong opponent we’ll have in front of us... but we’re also clear about our objective, which is to go through.”
“Obviously, this could be a match for our history books,” Koke told a press conference on Monday. “Reaching the semi-finals again after so many years would be incredible, and we're not thinking about the Cup final yet. We have to play this one as if it were a final.”
Koke, the Atletico Madrid veteran, has fond memories of his 2014 goal that helped his team knock Barcelona out of the Champions League. “That goal is something that will always be with me,“ Koke said, reflecting on the moment that showcased his talent on the big stage.
“I've watched it several times,” he said. “When matches like this come around, you draw on those memories to fire yourself up.”

Atletico Madrid's LaLiga campaign has lost momentum, with three straight defeats to Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Sevilla, effectively ending their title hopes. Coach Diego Simeone has prioritized cup competitions, rotating his squad in those league matches.
Barcelona leads LaLiga with 79 points, 9 points ahead of Real Madrid. Villarreal is third with 61 points, while Atletico is fourth with 57 points, 11 points ahead of fifth-placed Real Betis with seven games left. Atletico's Champions League spot next season is almost secured.
Barcelona faces an uphill task, trailing 2-0, as they visit the Metropolitano Stadium, where Atletico has only lost three matches all season, none by more than one goal.
“It's only natural that they're feeling hopeful. But my teammates are absolutely raring to go – they respect the opposition, but they're determined to win the match,” Koke said. “Barcelona are a team that suffocate you and put you under pressure, and we need to show the character to keep possession.”
