Mitrovic heads Al Rayyan to first QSL Cup and ends seven-year wait...
Aleksandar Mitrovic’s Al Rayyan claimed their maiden QSL Cup crown, with the forward on the scoresheet in a 2-0 win over Muaither SC in the final.
Roger Guedes broke the deadlock late in the first half to put Al Rayyan ahead, calmly finishing past the goalkeeper after using slick footwork to beat his marker.
Eight minutes into the second half, Serbia international Mitrovic doubled the advantage with a header from a free-kick.
Muaither never looked like mounting a comeback from there, as Al Rayyan controlled proceedings through to full-time to lift their first piece of silverware since 2018.
Speaking after the final, Mitrovic said: “The feeling is amazing. We worked very hard for this. It's been a long season, in the end we reach the final.
“We are so happy, because we put a lot of work and hopefully this is a big push for us in the future. This will give us confidence to win more trophies.
"But I'm very happy for the final. After a long time, we bring a trophy to the club.”
It marks Mitrovic’s first trophy since his move to Qatar from Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal, arriving a month after he said it was his main objective.
“The goal is to win at least one trophy,” he said in March.
“In the last few years, the team has been really unlucky, came close to winning a few trophies but never took them home. So I hope the goals I score will be important in bringing a trophy back to the club.”
