UCL: Bayern Blasts Atalanta 6-1, One Foot in Quarters
Bayern Munich cruises to 6-1 win over Atalanta, with Michael Olise on fire, putting one foot in the UCL quarter-finals.
Bayern's 6-1 thrashing of Atalanta puts them one win away from UCL quarters...
Bayern Munich is on! They smashed Atalanta 6-1, with Olise leading the charge. Now they've got one foot in the UCL quarter-finals in UCL round of 16.
Vincent Kompany’s charges started on the offensive and reaped the rewards of their early pressure when a cleverly-worked corner resulted in Serge Gnabry working a yard inside the area and firing the ball across the six-yard line for Josip Stanisic to tap home.
Die Roten continued to dominate, and they duly doubled their advantage midway through the first half when Michael Olise stepped in off the right and arrowed a left-footed effort into the far corner.
Atalanta were buckling. Olise set up Gnabry for the third, threading a perfect ball through for him to finish with aplomb.
Atalanta were lucky to be only 3-0 down. Nicolas Jackson had a goal disallowed, and Gnabry hit the bar, showing Bayern's dominance.
Nevertheless, the record German champions soon had their fourth goal less than 10 minutes into the second period, breaking at pace from an Atalanta free-kick before Jackson applied the finishing touch to a sweeping move.
Chances continued to come for the visitors, and La Dea initially had Carnesecchi to thank for keeping the scoreline at least half-respectable, with the shot-stopper quick off his line to prevent Olise adding a fifth.
That was nothing more than a temporary reprieve for the hosts, though, and they were soon picking the ball out of the back of the net once more courtesy of another trademark Olise finish.

Jamal Musiala was next to get himself on the scoresheet, bagging Bayern’s sixth midway through the second half by turning home Jackson’s cross from close range.
Dayot Upamecano almost got in on the act, too, when he saw his header crash back off the post, but that would have just been the cherry on top of Bayern’s already delicious cake - the only real blemish on the evening was a worrying-looking injury to Alphonso Davies.
The Bavarians have almost certainly booked their spot in the last eight, where they’ll face a blockbuster tie against either Real Madrid or Manchester City
Atalanta needs a miracle to turn this around. Pasalic's late goal was a consolation. Guess they're focusing on next season's UCL spot.
