Themba Zwane impresses in Panama draw, secures World Cup spot if fit, according to coach Hugo Broos...

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has confirmed that Themba Zwane will definitely be part of the 2026 World Cup squad if he stays fit. Zwane impressed Broos with his performance against Panama, playing for an hour in the 1-1 friendly draw.

The 36-year-old playmaker has been plagued by injuries, but Broos is willing to give him a spot if he can maintain his fitness. Zwane's experience and skill are valued by Broos, who believes he can make a significant impact at the World Cup.

“He is such a good player,” said Broos. “He made us play better football. But I knew also that he’s not ready to play 90 minutes. And we have to take attention with him and be careful with him, not to overload him because when you overload him, he could have injuries, I’m sure of it.

“So therefore, that was the reason why he came out after 55 minutes. We will see him next Tuesday (in Cape Town), he’ll recuperate. And if he recuperates, he will play again, because he needs that.”

Coach Broos is pushing for more playing time for Zwane at Sundowns, hoping he'll get more starts in the coming months. Zwane's been limited to cameo roles since returning from a long-term injury, and Broos believes he has more to offer the team.

“I cannot decide about that, but I hope that he gets more playing time at Sundowns also because he needs that rhythm of the game. He needs those minutes to play,” Broos said.

“And we saw a few moments also in the game when he was a little bit too slow. And that the reason of that is because he doesn’t play enough.

“But again, if Themba stays like he is now, fit, no injuries, then even when he’s not ready for 90 minutes, he will be with us at the World Cup.”

South Africa will face Panama again in Cape Town on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at 7:30 PM at the DHL Stadium. This is the second match in a two-game series, following their 1-1 draw in Durban on Friday. Coach Hugo Broos is pleased with his team's performance and is hoping to maintain their momentum and address key areas ahead of the FIFA World Cup.
