Bafana Bafana Held to Draw by Panama: Clinical Finishing Lacking

South Africa Vs Panama
Bafana's big chance conundrum, 3 big misses vs Panama

Bafana Bafana dominated Panama but missed chances galore in a 1-1 draw. Oswin Appollis scores but Bafana's lack of clinical finishing vs Panama. Can they improve for the World Cup?

Hugo Broos' Bafana show promise but waste chances in 1-1 draw with Panama...

Bafana Bafana were held to a 1-1 draw by Panama in a friendly at Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium, despite dominating the game. They were poor in front of goal, failing to capitalize on their chances against a team ranked 26 places above them in the FIFA Rankings.

The World Cup warm-up match was a good test for both sides, with another clash scheduled for Cape Town on Tuesday. Despite the draw, there are reasons to be optimistic for Bafana Bafana heading into the World Cup.

Oswin Appollis had the game's first big chance, but he spilled it. Played into space on the right, he shot straight at Panama goalkeeper Luis Mejia. The visitors' defence was caught napping, and Appollis, a usually clinical finisher, couldn't capitalize.

Lyle Foster's near miss was next. He rounded the keeper after a dodgy back-pass but couldn't finish from a tight angle, shooting wide. Two sitters for Bafana in the first 20 minutes.

Panama took the lead with a well-taken goal. Bafana's shaky defence, particularly the centre-back duo of Khulumani Ndamane and Ime Okon, gifted Yoel Barcenas the chance to score. The Panama striker made no mistake, beating Ronwen Williams with a low shot.

Tshepang Moremi had a shooting chance, but his effort went narrowly wide. Bafana's big chance conversion remains a concern: three big chances, one on target (Appollis' early miss). They'll need to improve that for the World Cup.

More missed chances for Bafana! Lyle Foster was one-on-one with sub keeper Orlando Mosquera after great play with Oswin Appollis, but couldn't beat him. Then Ime Okon headed wide from a free-kick. They're creating chances, just not converting.

Bafana finally got their reward. Oswin Appollis, their most prolific player in the last 18 months, scored his 8th international goal. Khuliso Mudau headed a cross to the back post, and Appollis thrashed it home on 49 minutes.

Themba Zwane was a highlight for Bafana. He brought creativity and intelligence to the game, with clever passes and assured touch. Great return for him, first cap since Oct 2024.

Bafana's display was solid, but clinical finishing was lacking. They dominated, Panama scored off a mistake, and Bafana missed too many chances. Hugo Broos will be disappointed, but there's positives to build on. Next up: Cape Town on Tuesday.
