Schjelderup faces U.S. visa hurdle after suspended sentence

Norwegian football star Andreas Schjelderup's World Cup hopes uncertain due to U.S. visa issues following suspended prison sentence for sharing explicit material involving minors.

Schjelderup's conviction for sharing sexual material of minors sparks U.S. visa concerns, threatening World Cup dreams...

Andreas Schjelderup, the Norwegian international midfielder from Benfica, is still uncertain about obtaining a World Cup visa after receiving a two-week suspended prison sentence in November last year. The sentence was handed down by a Danish court after Schjelderup was found guilty of sharing sexual material of two boys under 18.

The uncertainty surrounding Schjelderup's visa stems from the U.S. authorities potentially classifying his conviction as “moral turpitude,” making entry difficult without a waiver. Danish lawyer Martin Dahlgaard notes that a suspended sentence makes it challenging to obtain a U.S. visa, especially if Schjelderup doesn't already possess one.

The conviction could be classified as "moral turpitude" by U.S. authorities, making it tough for Schjelderup to enter the country without a waiver. This classification can be a major obstacle for anyone trying to get a U.S. visa.

Danish lawyer Martin Dahlgaard points out that a suspended sentence can make it really hard to obtain a U.S. visa. If Schjelderup doesn't already have a valid visa, he'll have to apply through the American Embassy in Oslo, and the conviction might hurt his chances.

Andreas Schjelderup is still uncertain about traveling to the USA for the World Cup. “An application has been submitted. I don't know more than that. I hope it will be resolved, and those are also the indications I have received, but I don't know more than that. I can't do anything about it,” he said.

Norway qualified for the 2026 World Cup after beating Italy 4-1 in Milan, with Schjelderup on the bench as an unused substitute. Now, he's waiting to see if he'll be part of the squad in June
