Ochoa Returns: Mexico Unveils Squad for World Cup Warm-Ups
| Mexico coach Javier Aguirre calls up Ochoa, Fidalgo for Portugal, Belgium friendlies |
Mexico names squad for World Cup warm-ups against Portugal and Belgium, including veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa and debutant Álvaro Fidalgo. El Tri prepares for June 11 opener vs South Africa.
Ochoa's experience and leadership will be valuable assets to the team, especially with the World Cup just around the corner...
Guillermo Ochoa is making a comeback to the Mexican national team, earning a spot in the roster for the upcoming World Cup warm-up matches against Portugal and Belgium. The 40-year-old goalkeeper, who currently plays for Limassol in Cyprus, is looking to make it to his sixth World Cup, having featured in the previous five editions from 2006 to Qatar 2022.
Ochoa's experience and leadership will be valuable assets to the team, especially with the World Cup just around the corner. He's been called up by coach Javier Aguirre, alongside new face Álvaro Fidalgo, who earned his first-ever senior team call-up. These friendlies will give Ochoa a chance to solidify his spot in the team and potentially secure his place in the World Cup squad.
Álvaro Fidalgo, the Spanish-born midfielder, has been called up to the Mexican national team for the first time, marking a significant milestone in his career. Fidalgo, who joined Real Betis in February after spending five years at Club América in Mexico, has completed the necessary process to represent Mexico, having obtained his Mexican nationality in December 2024.
Fidalgo's call-up is part of coach Javier Aguirre's preparations for the 2026 World Cup, and he'll be looking to solidify his place in the team. He's the fourth Spanish player to don the Mexican jersey, joining an elite group of naturalized players who've represented El Tri.
Mexico is set to face Portugal on March 28 at the iconic Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, marking the stadium's reopening after World Cup renovations. Just three days later, they'll take on Belgium at Soldier Field in Chicago.
As co-hosts of the World Cup alongside the US and Canada, Mexico will kick off their campaign in Group A against South Africa on June 11, with the match scheduled at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
