New York Islanders' defenseman Matthew Schaefer is on the cusp of making NHL history! He scored two goals in Sunday's thrilling 5-4 win over the Florida Panthers, bringing him to 20 goals on the season. This achievement makes him the first Islanders defenseman to score 20+ goals in a season since Hall of Famer Denis Potvin.
Schaefer's impressive rookie season has been nothing short of spectacular, with 44 points in 61 games. He's currently tied for second in goals among all defensemen, trailing only Jakob Chychrun. If he keeps this pace, he'll not only make Islanders history but could also become a strong contender for the Calder Trophy.
Islanders Edge Panthers 5-4, Rookie Defenceman Schaefer Sets Sights on Leetch's Record
The 18-year-old Schaefer had already broken the record for most goals by a rookie defenceman under the age of 20. Now, after scoring two goals in the win of the Panthers, he now needs just four more to surpass Brian Leetch (1988-1989) for the most ever by a rookie defenceman of any age.
