Danish tennis player Holger Rune stranded in Qatar; family criticizes government's slow response to escalating conflict...
Holger Rune's mother and agent, Anneke Rune, is furiating at the Danish government for not doing enough to get her son and other stranded Danes out of Doha, Qatar. She's frustrated that they're not getting any help, saying “We want to leave, but we haven’t heard anything from Denmark. It’s disappointing.”
The 22-year-old tennis star is currently stuck in Doha, where he was rehabbing his serious Achilles tendon injury at the Aspetar sports hospital. The recent escalation of conflict in the Middle East has led to flight cancellations, leaving Holger and his team stranded.
Holger Rune, the Danish tennis star, is stuck in Doha, Qatar, along with thousands of other Danes, due to the escalating conflict between Iran, the USA, and Israel, which has led to the cancellation of all flight departures in the Middle East. Rune's mother, Aneke, expressed concern and frustration, stating that they haven't heard anything from the Danish government, unlike other countries like the UK, which has announced evacuation plans.
The situation is understandably dire, with Rune describing it as “brutal” and sharing that they witnessed missile interceptions and explosions in the sky. His mother mentioned that they're trying to stay safe and are packing, but have no idea when they'll be able to leave Doha. The Danish government has been criticized for not having a clear evacuation plan in place for its citizens.
“We want to get out. But we still haven't heard anything from Denmark. It is disappointing. Either we are completely paralyzed in our country, or they are just p..... off with their citizens. I think of the latter,” she says, and continues:
“Why don't they reach out and ask where we are? Or give a number you can call around the clock? "What are they working on? A military plane that comes to collect all Danes? Or what are they working on? Then they must disclose it, so that Danes do not themselves have to sit and spend hours researching alternatives, options, and car hire across the border to get out of Qatar,” she says to bt.dk.
Holger Rune and his team are hoping to escape Doha and fly to Los Angeles, where he's got sponsor obligations at the Indian Wells tournament. That's a big deal, and they're eager to get him back on track, especially after his Achilles tendon injury.
