Devon Conway Leads NZ to Big T20 Win Over SA
New Zealand levels T20 series 1-1 with 68-run win over South Africa. Devon Conway scores 60, Lockie Ferguson takes 3-16 as NZ wins in Hamilton.
“I think we bowled really well but lost our way with the bat...”
Devon Conway led the Kiwi charge with a blazing 60 off 49 balls, powering New Zealand to a 68-run T20 win over a depleted South Africa in Hamilton. The Proteas, who won the toss and opted to field, were left chasing 176 off 20 overs.
Conway's knock helped New Zealand post 175 for six in their 20 overs.
The tourists struggled throughout their reply and were bowled out for 107, suffering a heavy defeat on a tricky pitch where the ball didn't bounce as expected.
New Zealand's innings got a boost from Conway's solid start, while Josh Clarkson's unbeaten 26 off just 9 balls blasted the score up in the closing overs.
Teenage seamer Nqobana Mokoena was impressive, taking 0-22 in four overs. All-rounder Wiaan Mulder chipped in with 2-14 in two overs, helping New Zealand's cause.
“It was trying to build a partnership, trying to calm myself down," Conway said. “Facing a bowler from around the wicket was something new for me. It has been pretty quite a few months for me, going to India and not featuring in the World Cup.
“I have played with some of the South Africa guys growing up and if they speak Afrikaans I can understand.”
South Africa's reply never gained momentum, losing wickets regularly. George Linde top-scored with 33 off 12 balls.
Lockie Ferguson (3-16) and Ben Sears (3-14) were the standout home bowlers, helping New Zealand secure the win.
“I think we bowled really well but lost our way with the bat,” South Africa captain Keshav Maharaj said. “There was dew but the pitch got worse to bat on.
“As a seam-bowling unit, the guys have done really well. And there was some salvaging from George with the bat, so there were some positives. It's good to have fans whereever we go.”
