Denmark Fall Short, Czech Republic secure World Cup spot in penalty thriller...
The Czech Republic has qualified for the FIFA World Cup finals for the first time in 20 years, thanks to a thrilling penalty shootout win over Denmark. The Czechs, who had previously beaten the Republic of Ireland on penalties, showed remarkable courage and skill to overcome Denmark's attacking prowess in Prague.
Denmark had dominated North Macedonia 4-0 in their previous match, but the Czech Republic's defense proved too strong. Pavel Sulc scored early for the Czechs, but Joachim Andersen equalized for Denmark in the 72nd minute. The match went to extra time, where Ladislav Krejci scored again for the Czechs, only for Kasper Hogh to level it again in the 111th minute. In the penalty shootout, the Czechs converted three of their four penalties, securing their spot in the 2026 World Cup.
Czechia started strong despite being the underdogs, ranked 43rd in FIFA, 23 places below Denmark. They took the lead in the third minute when Vladimir Coufal's corner was cleared into the path of Pavel Sulc, who scored a stunning right-footed strike from the edge of the area, beating Mads Hermansen.
Denmark's response to falling behind early was quite encouraging. Rasmus Højlund put pressure on Matej Kovar at his near post, but the goalkeeper made a great save to parry Gustav Isaksen's dipping free-kick over the bar.
As the half progressed, Brian Riemer's team continued to dominate possession, but they were almost caught off guard by a swift Czech counter-attack. Lukas Provod received a sublime through ball from Sulc and his effort was diverted just past the far post by Mads Hermansen, keeping the score at 1-0 in favor of Czechia.
After the break, the Czechs maintained their solid defensive shape, determined to edge out a victory against Denmark, who were struggling to find answers to keep their World Cup hopes alive. Denmark's chances seemed to be dwindling, but they managed to equalize through a set piece in the 72nd minute. Joachim Andersen rose above Matej Kovář to head home a powerful bullet header from Mikkel Damsgaard's delivery, breaking the Czechs' stubborn resistance.
Denmark's team, led by Riemer, pushed hard to score a potentially game-winning second goal, dominating possession in the Czech half. Mikkel Damsgaard came close to scoring with a powerful long-range shot that narrowly missed the post.
As the match entered its final stages, Denmark continued to apply pressure, seeking a winning goal. Despite their efforts, the game headed into extra time, with Damsgaard's earlier attempt being the only shot on target for Denmark in the second half.
Czechia's lack of attacking creativity seemed to be catching up with them, but the Epet ARENA erupted into cheers with a second Czech goal 10 minutes after the restart. Tomáš Souček caused chaos inside the box from Coufal's cross, and the ball fell perfectly for captain Ladislav Krejčí to fire home a deflected strike past Mads Hermansen.
Just when it seemed Czechia was edging closer to the finals, Denmark's Riemer’s team hit back to level the score once again. Kasper Høgh headed home a corner to make it 2-2 in the 111th minute, sending the match to penalties.

Kasper Hogh met Anders Dreyer's corner with a stunning header, scoring his first senior international goal and deflating the atmosphere of the partisan crowd. This dramatic turn of events ultimately sent the contest to a penalty shootout.
Momentum shifted in favor of Czechia when Rasmus Hojlund hit the bar. As Anders Dreyer and Mathias Jensen also failed to convert their penalties, Michal Sadílek stepped up and scored the decisive spot-kick, sparking wild celebrations among the Czech fans
This result will be remembered as one of the Czech Republic's greatest footballing achievements, with Šulc, Soucek, and Krejci joining the likes of 2006 legends Petr Cech, Tomas Rosicky, and Pavel Nedvěd at the World Cup.
The Czech Republic will now join Mexico, South Africa, and South Korea in Group E at the World Cup finals.
