Cristina Bucsa overcomes Magdalena Frech in a three-set final...

Cristina Bucsa has finally won her first WTA title. She defeated Magdalena Frech 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 in the Merida Open final, securing her first singles championship. This victory marks a significant milestone in her career, propelling her to a career-high ranking of 29th in the world.

Bucsa's path to the title was impressive - she didn't drop a set until the final, where Frech pushed her to three sets. Her semi-final win over seventh-ranked Jasmine Paolini was particularly notable, marking her first career victory over a top-10 player.

She started off blazing, winning the first three games and rebounding strong from a rough patch in the fourth to take the next three, while Frech's form wavered.

Frech ramped up the intensity in the second set, but Bucsa struggled with errors, falling 0-3 down to the Pole. Yet, Frech was broken in the fourth game of the third, levelling things up.

“First, I want to congratulate Cristina for an unbelievable week,” said Frech on her loss. “You played amazingly. I gave everything on the court. I left all my heart, but it wasn’t enough for you today. You played really great. I just want to congratulate you and your team for great work. For sure, it’s not the first and the last final for you. I wish you good luck for the rest of the season.”

Bucsa faced a break point as she served for the match, but she dug deep and sealed it with two gutsy volley winners and Frech's double faults.

“Magdalena, congratulations for this incredible week,” said Busca after the match. “I don’t know if you remember, we played in Saint Malo… We give all our best. Here we demonstrated how tough we are. You’re also a great champion. I also want to congratulate your coach for the amazing job he’s doing with you. I wish you a very fast recovery for Indian Wells. Hope to see you in many more finals.”

Talk about a turnaround. Bucsa flips the script, winning her first WTA title after five straight losses. She's now World No. 31.
