Bayer Leverkusen secured a narrow 1-0 win over Hamburg, ending their three-game winless streak and solidifying their top-six position. The visitors had a great chance to score early on, but Martin Terrier's effort hit the crossbar after a cross from Aleix Garcia.
The match was intense, with Leverkusen ultimately breaking the deadlock through an Albin Ekdal own goal in the 18th minute. Hamburg pushed hard for an equalizer, but Leverkusen held on for the win, despite finishing with ten men after Tin Jedvaj was sent off.
With opportunities few and far between in the first half, a rare bright moment saw Christian Kofane head a cross goalwards just after the half-hour mark, but Daniel Heuer Fernandes was able to get across and gather the ball.
None of Hamburg’s previous five Bundesliga matches were goalless at half-time, but this always looked the likeliest outcome after a first period which lacked attacking quality from both sides.
Die Rothosen failed to register a shot on target in the opening 45 minutes. However, they would have been pleased with their defensive efforts as they kept the league’s sixth-highest scorers at bay.
Although Hamburg lost to Leipzig last time out, that was their first defeat in seven games, with that run of form helping them to build a useful buffer to the relegation zone. However, as the game entered the final 20 minutes, their stubborn resistance was eventually broken

Kofane scored the decisive goal, firing past Heuer Fernandes after a chip from Ibrahim Maza, sparking wild celebrations among Leverkusen fans and securing a vital win for the defending champions.
Leverkusen's win moves them to within three points of the top four, keeping their European hopes alive. They kept their first away clean sheet of the season, a crucial result that keeps them in contention.
Hamburg, on the other hand, remains 11th, four points above the relegation zone. Their solitary win against top-half teams this season was against Leverkusen earlier in the campaign.
