Washington Capitals' Alexander Ovechkin reaches 1,000 goals, cements legacy as all-time great...

Alexander Ovechkin has joined the elite club of NHL players with at least 1,000 combined goals in regular season and playoffs, alongside Wayne Gretzky. The 40-year-old Washington Capitals star achieved this milestone with his 26th goal of the season, a power-play goal against the Colorado Avalanche.

Ovechkin's impressive career is marked by numerous records, including being the all-time leading goal scorer in NHL history with 923 regular-season goals. He now needs just 17 more combined goals to surpass Gretzky's record of 1,016 goals.

The Great 8 is crushing it! He's already broken Gretzky's all-time regular season record and is now at 923 goals. His 0.59 goals per game average is the second-highest in NHL history, and since turning 35, his 0.53 per game average is the highest of any player of that age or older - ever.

Ovi's on fire - he's now scored a record 447 goals since turning 30.

Washington dropped to 35-27-9 with the loss and now sit five points behind the Detroit Red Wings (84) for a Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.
