Ajax has parted ways with interim manager Fred Grim after a disappointing 3-1 loss to FC Groningen. oscar Garcia, who was previously in charge of Jong Ajax, will take over as interim manager until the end of the season. García, a 52-year-old former FC Barcelona forward, brings experience from clubs like Watford and Brighton & Hove Albion. He'll be assisted by Carlos García, Juan Pablo Colinas, and Enrique Sanz, who are also moving up from Jong Ajax.

Technical director Jordi Cruijff stated, “Fred and I had a conversation today about what is best for the club. Together we agreed that something needs to change. He stepped in during a difficult period and has done everything he could. We are grateful to him for that.”

Ajax's struggles continued into 2026. They narrowly lost to Telstar after the winter break, then won just three of their next 11 games. After beating FC Volendam 2-0 on Jan 24, they managed only one win in their last seven games. The 3-1 loss at FC Groningen was the final straw for Jordi Cruyff.

“Fred and I had a conversation today about what is best for the club. Together we agreed that something needs to change,” Cruyff said in a club statement.

“He stepped in during a difficult period and has done everything he could. We are grateful to him for that. Oscar will see out the season. The coming months are very important for the club. We still have eight matches to play and we must get the maximum out of them together.”

Fred Grim's interim stint as Ajax manager has come to an end. In 21 games, he led the team to nine wins and six losses. Grim will return to his previous role in the club's youth academy.

Ajax is currently fourth in the Eredivisie, 24 points behind leaders PSV and five points behind second-placed Feyenoord. NEC is just one point behind Ajax, but their game is yet to be played this weekend.
