Von Allmen and Nef Win Gold in Thrilling Team Event

Allmen and Nef winning gold

Shiffrin and Johnson also won gold at last year's world championships but, apart from Sunday's race, the downhiller has stood on the World Cup podium only once this season, and that was third in a super-G last month.

The event is being held for the first time at the Winter Olympics in the team format. Shiffrin is also competing in slalom and giant slalom...

Franjo von Allmen, the Swiss skiing sensation, has grabbed his second gold medal in just 48 hours at the Milano-Cortina Olympics. He teamed up with Tanguy Nef to win the men's team combined event, proving that even the fastest skier needs a little help sometimes.

Von Allmen was only fourth-fastest in the downhill leg, but Nef's stunning slalom run made up for it, securing a commanding 0.99-second lead over their competitors. The Swiss duo's combined time was 2:44.04, leaving Marco Odermatt and Loic Meillard, also from Switzerland, to share silver with Austria's Vincent Kriechmayr and Manuel Feller.

Nef, the unheralded 29-year-old, delivered when it mattered most, pulling off a stunning slalom run that secured the gold for Switzerland. He weaved through 67 gates with incredible skill, setting a target time that left the competition in the dust.

With Nef's impressive performance, the Swiss duo's combined time stood at 2:44.04, proving unbeatable for the rest of the field. It was a moment of triumph for the underdog, and fans won't forget this performance anytime soon.

Franjo von Allmen and Tanguy Nef secured the gold medal in the men's team combined event at the Milano-Cortina Olympics, winning by a commanding 0.99 seconds. Switzerland's top-ranked pair, Marco Odermatt and Loic Meillard, had to settle for silver, sharing the spot with Austria's Vincent Kriechmayr and Manuel Feller.

“This one is even a little bit more special because I wouldn't have made it on my own today,” von Allmen said, expressing his gratitude for Nef's crucial contribution. Von Allmen's teammate Nef delivered an outstanding slalom performance, clocking 51.82 seconds to secure the win.

“The first one was on my own, still special, but this is even a little bit more special because I wouldn't have made it on my own today,”
Von Allmen said.

“I can really ‌say thank you to Tanguy. He made the difference today. I had a really (weak) knees down here in the finish. I definitely ski better than I watch races, I think.

“Tanguy nailed it today.”

Tanguy Nef's big moment came when he teamed up with Franjo von Allmen to win gold in the men's team combined event at the 2026 Winter Olympics. This was a huge step up for Nef, who's previously known for winning silver at the 2025 World Championships alongside Alexis Monney.

Nef's impressive slalom run helped secure the win, making up for Von Allmen's fourth-place finish in the downhill leg. The Swiss duo finished with a combined time of 2:44.04, beating their compatriots Marco Odermatt and Loic Meillard, who shared silver with Austria's Vincent Kriechmayr and Manuel Feller.

“It felt really good. I knew ‌I had a lot of speed and was, 'OK, now just bring it home'. That's what happened,” he said.

Giovanni Franzoni and Alex Vinatzer's hopes for a medal were dashed as they finished seventh overall in the team combined event. Franzoni had set the pace with the fastest downhill time, 0.17 seconds ahead of Switzerland's Alexis Monney, but Vinatzer struggled in the slalom leg, finishing 18th fastest.

Vinatzer's disappointing performance meant Italy missed out on a potential medal, with Switzerland's Franjo von Allmen and Tanguy Nef going on to win gold. Franzoni had won silver in the individual downhill event on Saturday, but it was a tough day for the Italian team.

“I was extremely nervous at the start; it was a very difficult situation for me,” Vinatzer said.

“Giovanni delivered an outstanding run and deserved nothing less than a medal, and I really wanted to give it to him but couldn't hold it together.”

Marco Odermatt, Switzerland's dominant force in alpine skiing, arrived in Bormio with high expectations, but it was teammate Franjo von Allmen who stole the show, solidifying his position as the future of Swiss speed skiing. Von Allmen's impressive performance has left Odermatt in a challenging spot, having surprisingly failed to make the podium in the downhill events.

Odermatt did bounce back, though, securing a silver medal in the team combined event with Loic Meillard, narrowly avoiding a fourth-place finish. Austria's Raphael Haaser and Michael Matt missed out on a medal by just 0.03 seconds, making it a thrilling competition.

“First we were a little bit nervous it might be another fourth place,” the ‌28-year-old Odermatt said.

“We already have our souvenir from the Olympics.”

Tanguy Nef's impressive slalom run, clocking 51.82 seconds, put Switzerland in a strong position. However, Loic Meillard's disappointing performance dashed Marco Odermatt's hopes of overtaking them. Meanwhile, Switzerland's third pair, Alexis Monney and Daniel Yule, slipped down the rankings after Monney's impressive downhill run was undone by Yule's lackluster slalom.

Italians Giovanni Franzoni and Alex Vinatzer had hoped to spark an Italian party, but Vinatzer struggled under pressure, finishing 18th fastest in the slalom and seventh overall. Franzoni had set the pace with the fastest downhill time, but Vinatzer's disappointing run ended Italy's medal hopes.
