Mboko survives Andreeva scare in Doha

19-year-old Victoria Mboko saves match point to beat Mirra Andreeva 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(5) in WTA 1000 Doha quarter-final.

“It is my first time here, so far I am liking it a lot...”

Victoria Mboko, 18, has advanced to the Doha quarter-finals after a thrilling win over Mirra Andreeva, 16. The 10th seed saved a match point to secure a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(5) victory in a battle of teenage tennis sensations.

Mboko, from Canada, will now face the winner of Barbora Krejcikova and Jasmine Paolini in the quarter-finals.

Mboko, 19, wins in tough conditions, beating Andreeva in a thrilling match. She overcame the Russian's strong defence and court coverage for her third top-10 win.

Andreeva was on the brink of winning, serving for the match in the final set, but Mboko pushed her to the limit. The Russian exited in tears after two hours of intense play.

This was their second meeting this season. Mboko reversed a previous loss, having been beaten 6-3, 6-1 by Andreeva in Adelaide in January, though Andreeva was hampered then.

“It took everything, and at the end, we were both pretty tired. I'm glad to pull through today and get the win,” Mboko said.

“It is my first time here, so far I am liking it a lot. I'm really excited to play here tomorrow.”

Mboko started strong at the Doha WTA 1000, racing to a 3-1 lead before Andreeva fought back to level at 3-3. Mboko then pulled ahead to take the first set 6-3.

In the second set, both players struggled with their serves, trading breaks in the blustery conditions. Andreeva held serve at 5-3 to force a decider.

The final set was intense, with Andreeva serving for the match but Mboko pushing back to win 7-6(5).

Mboko and Andreeva were more solid on serve in the third set, but Andreeva took the lead 5-4. She had a match point, but Mboko broke back, turning the tide.

Mboko seized the initiative in the tiebreak, producing some outstanding tennis. She wrapped up the win on her third chance with a stunning backhand winner.

Mboko's Doha run continues. She's made it to her second WTA 1000 quarter-final, following her Canadian Open win over Naomi Osaka. Now, she's looking strong in the Middle East.

Maria Sakkari's back in form, reaching the last eight of a WTA 1000 for the first time this year. She dominated Varvara Gracheva 7-6(3), 6-0.

Other big names advancing include Jelena Ostapenko and Elisabetta Cocciaretto, who's making her WTA 1000 quarter-final debut.
