Newcastle United qualified for the Champions League last 16 with a 3-2 win over Qarabag FK, despite a late fightback from the Azerbaijani side. The Magpies had already secured a 6-1 victory in the first leg, making their progression a formality.

Eddie Howe's side made seven changes from their Premier League defeat at Manchester City, with 21-year-old defender Alex Murphy earning his first start. Newcastle dominated the early stages, taking a 2-0 lead through Sandro Tonali and Joelinton within the first six minutes.

Qarabag fought back in the second half, with Camilo Duran and Elvin Jafarguliyev scoring to reduce the deficit. However, Sven Botman's header ensured Newcastle held on for the win, securing a 9-3 aggregate victory.

Newcastle started flying in Baku, going 2-0 up inside eight minutes, and they were even quicker here, scoring twice within the first six minutes.

Sandro Tonali opened the scoring, steering home his first career UCL goal after Mateusz Klochalski brilliantly kept out William Osula's header. The Italian midfielder showed great composure to finish the move.

Just 80 seconds later, Harvey Barnes crossed for Joelinton to volley his sixth goal of the season into the roof of the net, doubling Newcastle's lead. The Magpies were off to a flying start, but the lack of jeopardy made for a subdued atmosphere at St James' Park.

Qarabag grew into the game, with Elvin Jafarguliyev forcing Aaron Ramsdale to make a crucial save with his legs at the near post on the half-hour mark. The Azerbaijani side was pushing hard to get back into the tie.

Newcastle's attack was on fire, scoring six unanswered goals between the 30th minute and half-time in the UCL this term. Jacob Murphy, celebrating his 31st birthday, had a great chance to add to the tally but fired wide after Nick Woltemade's clever flick. Aaron Ramsdale made a crucial save, tipping Camilo Duran's fierce strike over the crossbar.

The Magpies were dominating the game, and it was clear Qarabag was struggling to keep up. Newcastle's quality and home environment were giving them the edge they needed.

Ramsdale was unable to deny Duran six minutes after half-time, though, when Qarabag’s top UCL goalscorer (G5) outpaced Dan Burn and fired low inside the near post.

However, it took Newcastle only a minute to restore their two-goal lead as Sven Botman met Kieran Trippier’s outswinging corner with a powerful header to score his first-ever UCL goal.

Qarabag's fears came true when Anthony Gordon, Newcastle's four-goal hero from the first leg, came on as a substitute. However, the visitors quickly found the net again when Dan Burn handled the ball inside the box, allowing Elvin Cafarguliyev to score from the rebound after Aaron Ramsdale saved Marko Jankovic's penalty.

Both teams had opportunities to add more goals, which would have equalled the record total for a UCL knockout tie (13). Newcastle secured their fourth successive home win in the competition and matched their all-time highest overall tally of victories for a UCL season.

Newcastle United is heading to the last 16 of the Champions League, and they'll face either Barcelona or Chelsea in their next match. This is a big deal, as they've won a two-legged European knockout tie by 5+ goals for the first time since 2004/05. Qarabag, on the other hand, has a tough record against English teams, losing 10 of their 11 meetings (D1).
