Corinne Suter claims first World Cup win in 1,200 days, while Lindsey Vonn's season ends due to injury, leaving Aicher to close gap in standings.

“I’m living very much day by day. The end of the season is actually the part I love the most — there’s more light...”

Corinne Suter of Switzerland took the top spot in the women's downhill at Soldeu, while Germany's Emma Aicher finished fourth, significantly closing the gap with Lindsey Vonn in the World Cup standings. Vonn, who's currently leading with 400 points, now has a 94-point lead over Aicher, with only three races left in the season.

Vonn's season has unfortunately come to an end due to a severe injury sustained during the Olympic downhill, where she shattered her left leg and underwent multiple surgeries. The 41-year-old American Alpine ski great is expected to take around a year to fully recover.

Corinne Suter's win in Soldeu marks a triumphant return to the top of the podium, ending a 1,200-day wait since her last World Cup victory. The 31-year-old Swiss skier, who was only 14th at the Milano Cortina Games, started fourth and edged out Austrian Nina Ortlieb by 0.11 seconds, with Italian Sofia Goggia taking third place.

Suter's victory is her sixth career win and her first since a super-G in December 2022. World and Olympic champion Breezy Johnson of the United States finished fifth, 0.53 seconds behind Suter. This win is a significant milestone for Suter, who had been sidelined by injury in December.

Italian skiing sensation Federica Brignone has pulled out of the upcoming super-G races this weekend due to ongoing pain in her leg, which was broken last year. The double Olympic gold medallist had suffered multiple fractures and a torn ACL in a crash at the Italian Championships in April, and although she's made a remarkable recovery, she's still struggling with pain.

“I’m living very much day by day. The end of the season is actually the part I love the most — there’s more light, a more relaxed atmosphere. I love travelling and being on the slopes,” she had told reporters on Thursday.

“But if it becomes torture ‌because I’m in too much pain, I’ll make different decisions.”

Lindsey Vonn is currently leading the World Cup downhill standings with 400 points, despite being sidelined due to a severe leg injury sustained during the Olympic downhill. Emma Aicher is in second place with 306 points, followed by Kira Weidle-Winkelmann with 256 points and Sofia Goggia with 240 points.

A race win is worth 100 points, and with three races remaining, Aicher has a chance to close the gap. The next downhill event is scheduled to take place in Italy's Val di Fassa on March 6.
