Boxing legends Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao are set to face off again in a highly anticipated rematch this September at the Sphere in Las Vegas. The fight, which will be streamed live on Netflix, marks Mayweather's return to professional boxing after a nine-year retirement.

The bout is a repeat of their 2015 clash, dubbed the “Fight of the Century,” which generated a record 4.6 million pay-per-view buys and over $600 million in revenue. Mayweather won the original fight via unanimous decision, and he's confident he'll do the same this time around, saying, “I already fought and beat Manny once. This time will be the same result.”

Pacquiao, on the other hand, is determined to hand Mayweather his first professional loss. “I want Floyd to live with the one loss on his professional record and always remember who gave it to him,” he said. The Filipino boxer has been training hard and is looking forward to bringing glory to his country.

The event will stream live on Netflix on September 19th, marking the platform's foray into live sports with a splashy one-off event.

“Floyd and I gave the world what remains the biggest fight in boxing history. The fans have waited long enough - they deserve this rematch,” said Pacquiao, 47, in a joint statement.

Mayweather dominated Pacquiao in their 2015 showdown, dubbed the “Fight of the Century,” winning via unanimous decision. The fight was a massive financial success, generating a record 4.6 million pay-per-view buys.

The win netted Mayweather an estimated $300 million, making it the most lucrative fight in history with over $600 million in revenue. Despite the huge numbers, the fight itself was widely criticized for being a bit of a letdown.

Mayweather, a former multi-weight world champion, retired from professional boxing in 2017 with an unbeaten record of 50-0. However, he's continued to participate in exhibition fights, including an upcoming bout with Mike Tyson this spring.

Pacquiao, a multiple world champion, had a four-year retirement from boxing, during which he pursued a career in politics, running for the Philippine presidency in 2022. He returned to the ring last year, eager to reclaim his status as one of boxing's top stars.

Rumors of a Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch have been circulating for years. Speculation intensified last week after Mayweather announced he's returning to professional boxing this year.

“I already fought and beat Manny once. This time will be the same result,” said Mayweather, in the statement.

I want Floyd to live with the one loss on his professional record and always remember who gave it to him,” said Pacquiao.

The Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch will make history as the first professional boxing match at the Sphere in Las Vegas. The venue, which opened in 2023, is known for its concerts and films, and features a massive 160,000-square-foot wraparound screen.

The fight will stream globally on Netflix, reaching the platform's 325 million subscribers worldwide.

Netflix has been ramping up its sports content, and the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight is its latest big ticket. Last September, the streamer brought in 41 million viewers for Terence Crawford's clash with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in Las Vegas.

The platform's also known for stirring up controversy with fights like Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson in November 2024, and Jake Paul vs. Anthony Joshua last December - both were divisive but drew huge numbers.

The fights were widely panned as lackluster, but they didn't exactly fly under the radar - they drew massive global attention.

Mayweather, nicknamed “Money,” was once the world's highest-paid athlete and a multi-weight world champion. He last fought professionally in 2017, taking on UFC's Conor McGregor.

Mayweather, 48, is a polarizing figure - some love his defensive skills, others say he's a master of avoiding danger. He's been criticized for his style and accused of cherry-picking opponents to pad his record. He's also faced personal controversies, including time in prison for domestic violence.

Pacquiao, known as “The National Fist” in the Philippines and “PacMan” globally, is a boxing legend with titles in eight different weight classes.

Pacquiao's a national hero in the Philippines, where his rags-to-riches story resonates with many. He dropped out of high school at 14, sold donuts on the streets, and worked as a grocery stacker before becoming a boxing superstar.

Pacquiao took a four-year break from boxing to pursue politics, serving as a senator from 2016 and even running for president in 2022. He returned to the ring last year, but his comeback was marked by a draw against Mario Barrios - his record now stands at 62-8-3.
