Justin Verlander is heading back to the Detroit Tigers on a one-year contract worth $13 million. The three-time Cy Young Award winner has agreed to terms with the franchise where he began his MLB journey, signing the deal to rejoin Detroit.

Verlander comes home to Detroit as one of baseball's most accomplished pitchers ever. He earned American League MVP honors in 2011 while with the Tigers and later captured World Series championships with the Houston Astros in 2017 and 2022.

Although Justin Verlander will celebrate his 43rd birthday on February 20th, he expressed a desire to come back for a 21st Major League season following an up-and-down 2025 with the San Francisco Giants. He now strengthens an already formidable Detroit Tigers rotation featuring the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal and recent free-agent signing Framber Valdez.

A nine-time All-Star selection, Verlander boasts three career no-hitters and leads all active pitchers in innings pitched, strikeouts, and victories. With 3,553 career strikeouts, he ranks eighth on MLB’s all-time

In his 2025 season with the San Francisco Giants, Verlander posted a 4-11 record, a 3.85 ERA, and 137 strikeouts across 152 innings. Across his entire career to date, he holds a 266-158 record with a 3.32 earned run average.

Verlander began his career by spending his initial 13 seasons with the Detroit Tigers before embarking on an outstanding run with the Houston Astros from 2017 to 2022—though he sat out the full 2021 season while rehabilitating from Tommy John surgery on his elbow.

He signed a two-year, $86.6 million contract with the New York Mets after the 2022 season and made 16 starts for them before he was traded back to Houston in August of 2023.
