Jordan Stolz just made history, winning his first Olympic gold medal in the 1000m speed skating event with an Olympic record time of 1:06.28! This 21-year-old American phenom from Wisconsin dominated the competition, beating Dutch skater Jenning de Boo by half a second. Stolz, who already held the world record with a time of 1:05.37 set in Salt Lake City in 2024, proved he's a force to be reckoned with.
Stolz's victory marks the first US gold medal in the men's 1000m since Shani Davis won in 2010. He's now set his sights on winning three more gold medals in Milan, competing in the 500m, 1500m, and mass start events.
The competition is heating up. Outsiders for the title include Polish Damian Zurek, who clocked the season's second-fastest time at 1:06.02 in Salt Lake City, and Dutchman Joep Wennemars, son of Erben Wennemars, who won bronze in the 1000m at the 2006 Turin Games. Dutch legend Kjeld Nuis, four-time gold medalist and 2018 Olympic champion, is also vying for another historic win.
Home hero Daniele Di Stefano leads the pack with 1:08.17 after the first half, but Kjeld Nuis' final 1000m race, timed at 1:07.65, has put him back in contention.
Damian Zurek's hopes were dashed as he finished fourth in the 1000m speed skating event, behind Jordan Stolz, Jenning de Boo, and Zhongyan Ning's bronze medal time of 1:07.34. Meanwhile, Joep Wennemars' chances of a podium finish were ruined after a collision with China's Lian Ziwen forced a re-skate, which ended with a disappointing time of 1:08.46.
