Finland has sent their ski jumping head coach, Igor Medved, packing from the Winter Olympics due to an alcohol-related incident. The Slovenian coach breached internal regulations, prompting team officials to dismiss him from the Games. Medved had led Finland to sixth place in Tuesday's mixed team event, but now he's headed home.
Medved has apologized for his mistake, saying, “I made a mistake and I'm very sorry. I want to apologise to the entire Finnish team, the athletes and also the fans.” Lasse Moilanen will take over as coach for the rest of the Olympics. The Finnish Ski Association will review the matter further after the Games.
“Medved has travelled home today. It is about issues related to alcohol consumption. We take the violation of the team's rules seriously and react quickly,” Janne Hanninen, manager of the Finnish team, said in a press release on Thursday.
Igor Medved, the 44-year-old head coach of Finland's ski jumping team, remains under contract despite being sent home from the Winter Olympics due to an alcohol-related incident. The Finnish Ski Association will formally review the matter once the Olympics have finished.
“I wish the team peace to focus on the Games and continue the good work. I will not comment further on the matter,” Medved said.
The next ski jumping medal event is the men's individual Large Hill, happening this Saturday, February 15, 2026, at the Predazzo Ski Jumping Stadium. The first round starts at 6:45 PM, followed by the final round at 7:57 PM.
