Arsenal's title hopes took a hit as they were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium. Mikel Arteta's side missed the chance to regain a six-point lead at the summit, now sitting four points clear.
The Gunners faced a tough test against a Brentford side that's emerging as a genuine European qualification contender.
With Manchester City breathing down their necks after overcoming Fulham the previous day, Arteta’s men made an uncharacteristically nervy start here, as David Raya was forced to make amends for a sloppy clearance with a superb save to keep out Igor Thiago’s close-range header.
The hosts were looking very impressive on the ball, with Dango Ouattara unfortunate not to find a team-mate via his wicked delivery from the right-hand side.
Arsenal's first half was a forgettable one, failing to register a single shot on target despite dominating possession around the Brentford box. In fact, the four attempts made by both teams in the first half is one of the lowest in a Premier League game this season, with only the Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Brentford match in December having fewer attempts (three).
Brentford, on the other hand, had the best chance of the half with Igor Thiago's header superbly saved by David Raya. The Bees' pressure continued into the second half, but Arsenal eventually took the lead through Noni Madueke's header.
Arteta’s side were eager to quickly rediscover their goalscoring touch, and broke the deadlock just past the hour mark.
Piero Hincapié drilled in a brilliant cross the left towards Noni Madueke, who peeled away from Rico Henry and powered home a superb header past Caoimhín Kelleher.
Brentford’s response to falling behind was encouraging, and Keane Lewis-Potter should have done much better after heading wide at the far post from Mathias Jensen’s corner.
However, he did add his name to the scoresheet 10 minutes after Madueke’s opener to level the scores.
Sepp van den Berg flicked on a trademark long throw-in from Michael Kayode, and Lewis-Potter was there to head home at the far post. Keith Andrews’ side were now looking the more likely to strike next, with the Bees’ direct approach from set-pieces causing the Gunners defence all sorts of problems.
A chaotic finish at the Gtech 😯

Plenty of chances in the final minutes but it ends 1-1, leaving @Arsenal with a four point lead at the top of the league 👀 pic.twitter.com/O8IQtuDxJA
Igor Thiago was a constant thern for Arsenal's defence, but Cristhian Mosquera's sliding challenge denied him a late winner.
The match ended with both sides going all out, with Thiago and Gabriel Martinelli going close at both ends.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw, adding another twist to the thrilling title race. This result is a welcome boost for Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, now just four points behind Arsenal at the top of the table.
Noni Madueke scored his second goal in three matches in a strong all-round display on @Arsenal's right 💪

Brentford, meanwhile, are still pushing for European football and remain seventh, two points behind Liverpool. Their strong performance against Arsenal is a great sign for their chances.
