Mboko through in Doha

Victoria Mboko stuns Mirra Andreeva in a thrilling 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(5) win in Doha. Karolina Muchova, Anna Kalinskaya, Jelena Ostapenko, and Elisabetta Cocciaretto also through to Doha quarters.

“It took everything, and at the end, we were both pretty tired...”

Victoria Mboko came out on top in a thrilling match against Mirra Andreeva, winning 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(5) in the Doha quarter-finals. The 19-year-old Canadian saved a match point to clinch the victory, showcasing her resilience in tough, blustery conditions.

Mboko's win marks her third top-10 victory, overcoming Andreeva's strong defense and court coverage. Andreeva had served for the match in the decider but couldn't seal the win, eventually exiting in tears after two hours of intense play.

Andreeva and Mboko's second meeting this season saw the former cruise to a 6-3, 6-1 win, following her earlier 6-3, 6-1 victory in the Adelaide final in January, where Mboko was hampered.

“It took everything, and at the end, we were both pretty tired. I'm glad to pull through today and get the win,” Mboko said.

“It is my first time here, so far I am liking it a lot. I'm really excited to play here tomorrow.”

Mboko started strong in Doha, asserting her authority to lead 3-1, but Andreeva fought back to level at 3-3. Mboko then took control, soaring ahead to take the first set 6-3.

The second set was a different story, with both players struggling to hold serve in the blustery conditions. They traded breaks, but Andreeva crucially held at 5-3 to take it to a decider.

In the third set, both players were solid on serve, but Andreeva took the upper hand, leading 5-4. She had a match point, but Mboko broke back, and her opponent's mood began to dip. Mboko seized the initiative in the tiebreak, producing some incredible tennis. She eventually wrapped up the win on the third match point with a stunning backhand winner.

Mboko, 19, is making waves on the WTA tour. She's in only her second WTA 1000 quarter-final, after her stunning win at the Canadian Open in August, where she beat Naomi Osaka.

Mboko's next up is tough opponent Elena Rybakina, the Australian Open champion. Rybakina survived a thrilling match against Qinwen Zheng, who played some sensational tennis but ultimately lost 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Qinwen Zheng came out firing, catching Rybakina off guard with aggressive shots and targeting her serve. Despite her strong start, Rybakina's quality eventually shone through, finding consistency with her backhand.

Rybakina's win extends her unbeaten run to nine matches, showcasing her determination and skill.

Swiatek Battles Through

Iga Swiatek came from a set down to beat Daria Kasatkina 5-7, 6-1, 6-1, setting up a quarter-final clash with Maria Sakkari.

Swiatek struggled in the opening exchanges, with five breaks of serve in the first set. She squandered a 5-3 lead, allowing Kasatkina to reel off four straight games and take the set.

Swiatek turned it around after fending off three break points at 1-1 in the second set. She won the next seven games in a row, dominating the match with 11 wins out of the next 12 games.

Karolina Muchova cruised through after Karolina Pliskova retired with a leg injury in the first set. She'll face Anna Kalinskaya, who beat Elina Svitolina 6-4, 6-3.

Jelena Ostapenko, the last year's finalist, also made it through, while Elisabetta Cocciaretto stunned Coco Gauff to book her spot in a maiden WTA 1000 quarter-final.

Swiatek's dominance continues, reaching the quarter-finals for a fifth consecutive year at Doha. She's a force to be reckoned with on these courts.

Sakkari will be a tough opponent, securing her first WTA 1000 quarter-final since 2024 with a 7-6(3), 6-0 win over Varvara Gracheva.
