Macklin Celebrini scores twice as Canada dominates France

Canada wins Group A with a 10-2 thrashing of France, chasing top seeding in Olympic hockey.

“Trying to avoid the qualification game, we did that. Now let's just see the chips, where they fall...”

Canada wrapped up their perfect group stage with a dominant 10-2 win over France in the men's Olympic ice hockey tournament. The pre-tournament favorites had already secured a spot in the quarter-finals, but this convincing victory could propel them to top seeding on goal difference.

The Canadians were ruthless, scoring 10 goals against a French team that had no wins in their previous three matches. Macklin Celebrini, a 19-year-old phenom, scored twice, while Tom Wilson, Devon Toews, and Mark Stone also found the back of the net in the first period. Cale Makar and Sidney Crosby added to the tally in the second period, with Connor McDavid, Bo Horvat, and Brandon Hagel scoring in the third.

Canada's young gun Macklin Celebrini bagged a brace, while Tom Wilson, Devon Toews, and Mark Stone got in on the action in the opening period.

Cale Makar and Sidney Crosby added to the tally in the second, before Connor McDavid, Bo Horvat, and Brandon Hagel wrapped up the scoring in the third.

“Talking to the team - it had nothing to do ‌with where we're going to finish, what we're going to do, how many goals are we going to score - it was about are we getting better as a team,” said coach Jon Cooper.

“Trying to avoid the qualification game, we did that. Now let's just see the chips, where they fall.”

France put up a decent fight at first, as forward Floran Douay flipped one into the net just 13 seconds after Wilson opened the scoring. But they completely lost control of the contest from there as defenceman Toews retaliated for Canada just 39 seconds later.

Forward Stone robbed Alexandre ‌Texier of the puck for a shorthanded goal with less than four seconds left in the period to make it 3-1, and alternate captain Makar whipped the puck in from the blue line on a power play midway through the second.

Macklin Celebrini, the 19-year-old sensation, showcased his skills with a penalty shot goal, followed by Sidney Crosby's goal just 19 seconds later, fueling Canada's dominant performance.

The Olympic tournament, featuring NHL players for the first time since 2014, lived up to expectations with intense moments, including the first outright fight of the Games between Canadian Tom Wilson and Frenchman Pierre Crinon, despite the strict ban on fisticuffs.

Canadian Tom Wilson and Frenchman Pierre Crinon earned a game misconduct when they came to blows late in the third period, in a conflict that saw a referee dragged down.

France, who were without a win through three preliminary matches, will compete in Tuesday's qualification playoff.
