Dutch coach Ronald Koeman believes Matthijs de Ligt is deserving of his recall to the Netherlands squad, citing his strong performances for Manchester United. De Ligt's impressive form, including a late equaliser against Tottenham Hotspur, has earned him a spot back in the squad, replacing Inter Milan's Stefan de Vrij for the World Cup qualifiers against Poland and Lithuania.

De Ligt's recall is a testament to his growth and confidence, with Koeman praising his improved performances. The Netherlands are currently top of their group, with a three-point lead over Poland, and will look to secure their World Cup spot with wins against Poland and Lithuania

The Netherlands is in a strong position to qualify for the World Cup, with a three-point lead over Poland and a better goal difference. They can secure their spot with a win in Warsaw on Friday, or they can seal their place when they host Lithuania in Amsterdam on Monday.

“You decide separately for each player in the squad. I felt I should select Matthijs based on what he's showing.

“He's been through a difficult period. I've spoken to him and told him he didn't look confident in his actions, but now that's much better. And his position at the club and the club's performance will always be important,” the coach added.

Koeman explained that Nathan Ake's left-footedness was a factor in his selection, as it helps balance the squad's defensive options. “Partly, it is based on playing time, although Nathan Ake isn't playing 50% of the (Manchester City) matches, but he's part of this squad,” Koeman said, highlighting Ake's versatility and value to the team.

“Nathan himself is also concerned about the fact that he doesn't play much. He is one of my captains, though,” Koeman told reporters.

“He's a left-footed player, while we generally have a lot of right-footed central defenders. That makes all the difference having him in the squad. He's an important player who has always been there when I've needed him.”
