Mamelodi Sundowns has achieved a remarkable feat, equalling a CAF Champions League record this season. Their 3-1 victory over St Eloi Lupopo marked their 11th successive group campaign, a testament to their emergence as one of Africa's top clubs.

This record-equalling achievement puts them alongside Egyptian giants Al Ahly, showcasing their consistency and prowess in the competition. Sundowns' performance has been impressive, with nine out of 10 previous group competitions seeing them progress to the last eight.

Mamelodi Sundowns' impressive run in the CAF Champions League is even more remarkable considering they've made it past the group phase and into the last eight in nine of their previous 10 group competitions. However, they've struggled to reach the final, managing to do so only twice - when they won in 2016 and last season when they lost to Pyramids of Egypt.

Reaching the group phase of the Champions League is a top priority for clubs, driven by the significant increase in prize money from the Confederation of African Football. The winner takes home $4 million, the runner-up gets $2 million, semi-finalists receive $1.2 million, and quarter-finalists get $900,000. Even teams that don't make it out of the group phase still walk away with $700,000.

The CAF Champions League prize money is substantial, with the winner taking home $4 million and the runner-up receiving $2 million. The semi-finalists will get $1.2 million, while the quarter-finalists will receive $900,000. Even teams that don't advance past the group phase will still earn $700,000.

This season is the 30th edition of the Champions League, which first launched in 1997 with eight teams competing in two groups. Orlando Pirates were one of the original teams but unfortunately, they were eliminated by Congolese club Lupopo, missing out on the opportunity to progress further after reaching the semi-finals last season.

African giants Al Ahly and Espérance have taken their CAF Champions League participation to new heights, extending their record for most group phase qualifications to 23 times each. This impressive streak has only been interrupted seven times for each club, with Al Ahly's last absence in 2015 and Espérance's in 2016.

Mamelodi Sundowns has made it to the group phase 13 times, tying them with Zamalek for fourth place. DR Congo's TP Mazembe leads the pack with 14 group stage qualifications, just one more than Sundowns' impressive tally.
