PSG's Luis Enrique blames 'big gifts' for defeat to Bayern Munich

PSG coach Luis Enrique attributes 2-1 Champions League defeat to 'big gifts' given to Bayern Munich, insists he's not looking for excuses despite mounting injuries.

“Ousmane’s injury has nothing to do with the previous one. It’s football - a contact sport...”

Luis Enrique, the coach of Paris St Germain, attributed his team's 2-1 Champions League defeat to “big gifts” given to Bayern Munich. Despite injuries plaguing the defending champions' squad, Enrique refused to make excuses for the loss.

PSG struggled in the first half, with Bayern Munich taking a 2-0 lead thanks to a Luis Diaz double. The Colombian winger's impressive performance was cut short when he was sent off for a dangerous tackle on Achraf Hakimi, forcing Enrique to make an early substitution. Ousmane Dembele had already left the pitch injured, adding to PSG's woes.

PSG's injury list continues to grow, with Dembele, Desire Doue, Bradley Barcola, Joao Neves, and Fabian Ruiz currently sidelined. This mounting list of absentees poses a significant challenge for Luis Enrique's squad.

Despite the setbacks, Luis Enrique remains unfazed, acknowledging that he needs to manage his squad more effectively. “I'm not looking for excuses,” he said, emphasizing his team's responsibility to perform despite the injuries.

“We’ll have to wait until tomorrow after the tests,” Luis Enrique told a press conference.

“Ousmane’s injury has nothing to do with the previous one. It’s football - a contact sport. It’s unlucky because it’s complicated for the player, but these things happen like it happened to (Bayern’s) Jamal Musiala (against PSG at the Club World Cup last July).”

Luis Enrique praised his team's performance in the second half, saying they did well and could have drawn the game if they had converted their chances. PSG dominated possession in the second half but struggled to create clear-cut scoring opportunities.

Despite the defeat, Luis Enrique remained calm and acknowledged that Bayern Munich were the better team in the first half. He emphasized that PSG's mistakes led to the goals and that his team needs to improve to achieve their goals. “When you make that kind of gifts to players like this, it's normal to lose the match — we could even have conceded more goals,” he said.

“In the first half, they were better than us. They created more chances, and we made some big gifts,” the Spaniard said. “When you make that kind of gifts to players like this, it’s normal to lose the match - we could even have conceded more goals.”

“I can’t remember a single match this season with the whole team fit,” he said.

“We have to manage that. I’m not looking for excuses - it’s our responsibility to do better. I’m calm and confident we’ll recover our players and our level. We’ve still played some very good matches.”

Bayern Munich tops the Champions League table with 12 points from four wins, while Paris Saint-Germain sits third with 9 points after three wins and one loss.
