Kaizer Chiefs' chances of winning the CAF Confederation Cup match against Al Masry were ruined by a horror piece of defending from Inacio Miguel, who gifted the hosts a late goal. The Amakhosi had looked the more likely side to win, having leveled the game just past the hour mark, but Miguel's mistake proved costly.

The Portuguese defender's error allowed Al Masry to snatch a 2-1 win, dealing a blow to Chiefs' hopes in the competition. It was a heartbreaking way to lose, given the team's earlier dominance. The result was a major setback for the Amakhosi, who now face an uphill task to progress in the tournament.

The first half was a tough one for Kaizer Chiefs, with chances few and far between. The best opportunity fell to the home side, but goalkeeper Brandon Petersen made a crucial save, sticking out a boot to cut out a low cross.

Al Masry had a rare chance, but Bradley Cross made an excellent block from seven yards out. The Chiefs were struggling to create opportunities, and it was largely a defensive display from them. That was until they were awarded a penalty just before the hour mark, when Petersen committed a foul as he rushed off his line to intercept a pass, taking down the Al Masry player in the process.

The penalty award was a clear one, and Rwanda international Bonheur Mugisha stepped up to convert the spot kick. Mugisha, who played the full 90 minutes for Rwanda in their 3-0 loss to Bafana Bafana last month, showed no nerves as he slotted the ball home.

Given Chiefs' struggles to break down the Al Masry defense, it was going to take something special to get the equalizer. And that's exactly what they got, thanks to Dillon Solomons' brilliant performance. The midfielder worked tirelessly, and his efforts paid off as Chiefs finally found the back of the net, leveling the score.

The moment of magic came from Sammy Solomons, who picked up the ball 30 yards from goal, cut inside, and beat two defenders before firing a low shot with his left foot into the bottom corner. It was an expert run and finish, and the goalkeeper had no chance.

Solomons' goal was a sweet moment, marking his first goal in over three years and making it a standout performance in just his fifth appearance of the season. The Amakhosi were looking like the most likely to win it, but a terrible defensive lapse would soon change everything.

It was a disastrous moment from Inacio Miguel, who had a simple clearance but completely missed the ball, allowing Al Masry's Mohamed Hashem to score the winner.

The experienced defender's mistake proved costly, as it gifted the hosts a 2-1 win and handed Chiefs a tough blow. This was Chiefs' first ever group stage match in the Confederation Cup, and just their second group phase appearance in any African club competition.

Mamelodi Sundowns' 11th consecutive CAF Champions League group stage appearance highlights the gap between them and Kaizer Chiefs in continental competition. The Amakhosi's lack of experience is telling, and it showed in their CAF Confederation Cup defeat to Al Masry.

Chiefs' only other group phase appearance came in the Champions League in 2020/21, where they reached the final but lost to Al Ahly. They had a strong run, advancing from their pool with nine points, beating Wydad Casablanca, Horoya, and Petro Atletico along the way.
