David Raum: The Unsung Hero of Germany's World Cup Campaign
Germany full-back David Raum has emerged as a crucial player for the national team, driving their World Cup qualification push. The 27-year-old RB Leipzig defender is content with staying out of the spotlight, allowing more talented teammates to shine.
Germany is looking to secure their spot in next year's World Cup tournament with two crucial wins in their final qualifiers. They'll face Luxembourg on Friday, November 14, 2025, before hosting Slovakia on Monday, November 17, 2025.
Germany tops Group A, leading second-placed Slovakia on goal difference. Northern Ireland is third with six points, while Luxembourg is at the bottom without any points. The group winner will earn automatic World Cup qualification, while the runner-up will enter a playoff in March 2026.
Coach Julian Nagelsmann praised Raum as the team's “chewing gum,” highlighting his ability to unite the squad. Raum humbly accepted the compliment, citing his experience and strong connections with teammates. His leadership, speed, and defensive prowess will be vital in Germany's final World Cup qualifiers against Luxembourg and Slovakia.
“I took this as a compliment. I have now been around for a few years, and I know the squad. I have a good connection to all the players,” RB Leipzig defender Raum told a press conference.
“I like to spend time with everyone in the team. There is a good connection that is being formed at the moment. We spend a lot of time together,” he said.
“I try to be the chewing gum and have a good understanding with all.”
Germany, a four-time World Cup champion, is eager to turn their fortunes around and make a deep run in the upcoming tournament. Their goal is to finally bring home the trophy, after falling short in the group stage in the last two editions. Coach Julian Nagelsmann is leading the charge, with a talented squad and a winning mindset.
David Raum on the full-back position: "This position is often underestimated. A lot of the build-up play goes through us, creating important one-on-one duels. If you lose those, it often leads to big chances. Therefore, we have a lot of responsibility. pic.twitter.com/vtV6fHoUKB

“I have a new role (as Leipzig captain) and I feel really well in that,” Raum said.
“That gives me strength and more energy on the pitch to take the lead and perform well.
“This emotion, this physicality, this is what is expected from me (for Germany), and that is what I can do. The world-class players are in other positions, and they can do magic, they can decide games,” he said.
