Man Utd's Ruben Amorim wants more after defeating Liverpool

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim hailed his team's 2-1 win over Liverpool at Anfield as a well-deserved victory for the fans, thanks to Harry Maguire's late header that sealed the win and marked United's first victory at Anfield since 2016.

“It was a great win, not a very well-played game, but a great spirit, and that is all I can ask...”

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim hailed his team's win over Liverpool as a special moment, emphasizing that it was a much-needed boost for the fans after a tough start to the season. Harry Maguire's late header sealed a 2-1 victory, ending Liverpool's unbeaten run and marking United's first win at Anfield since 2016.

Amorim's side fought hard to secure the win, with Bryan Mbeumo scoring the opener inside 61 seconds and Maguire netting the winner in the 84th minute. Despite the convincing win, Amorim remains grounded, knowing that his team needs to build on this momentum to achieve their goals.

The win also brought frustration for Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who lamented his team's missed chances and poor set-piece defending. Liverpool's fourth consecutive defeat highlights their struggles, with Slot emphasizing the need for improvement.

United now sit ninth in the Premier League, just two points behind fourth-placed Liverpool. With no European or EFL Cup action to focus on until the end of 2025, United's next test is at home to Brighton & Hove Albion before pre-international break trips to Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur.

Ruben Amorim believes the 2-1 win over Liverpool will have little impact on his team's future prospects. “That was the biggest win in my time at Manchester United. It means a lot today, but tomorrow it won't mean a lot,” he said, emphasizing that upcoming matches will be crucial in determining United's season aspirations.

The Portuguese coach will be watching closely how his players respond when Brighton visits Old Trafford next weekend, which will give him a better indication of what United can achieve this season. United's recent results have been inconsistent, including a League Cup exit to Grimsby and a loss to Brentford that put Amorim's job under scrutiny.

The wins over Sunderland and Liverpool have boosted Manchester United's Premier League standings, lifting them to ninth place and narrowing the gap to fourth-placed Liverpool to just two points.

“It was really important for our fans. They struggled against Grimsby, against Brentford, and today they saw a different team,” added Amorim.

“To win in the stadium of the champions and our biggest rivals is really important.”

Despite the 2-1 win, Ruben Amorim expressed mixed feelings about his team's performance. Bryan Mbeumo's early goal gave United a perfect start, but they failed to capitalize on chances to extend their lead, with Bruno Fernandes hitting the post.

Amorim's concerns were validated when Liverpool pushed hard for an equalizer, and United had to defend resolutely. However, Harry Maguire's late header sealed the win, and Amorim's side earned valuable points in their title aspirations.

Cody Gakpo had Liverpool's best chances, hitting the woodwork three times before finally scoring the equalizer on 78 minutes. However, Harry Maguire ultimately became the match-winner, heading in Bruno Fernandes's cross to seal a 2-1 victory for Manchester United.

Maguire's winner was sweet redemption for the defender, who had missed a glorious chance to win the game in a 2-2 draw between the teams at Anfield earlier this year.

“It was a great win, not a very well-played game, but a great spirit, and that is all I can ask,” said Amorim.

Liverpool's Struggling Form

Arne Slot attributed Liverpool's 2-1 loss to Manchester United to a “negative set-piece balance,” highlighting his team's wastefulness in front of goal and vulnerabilities in set-piece defending. This defeat marks the fourth consecutive loss for Liverpool, a streak not seen since 2014.

Alexander Isak's quest for his first Premier League goal since joining Liverpool continued unabated, as he was denied by Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens before half-time. Despite opportunities, Liverpool's attack faltered, and set-piece issues persisted, with Slot's side conceding crucial goals from dead balls.

Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo both had opportunities to change the course of the game, but Salah fired wide early in the second half, and Gakpo headed off target after Maguire's winning goal.

“If you told me (before the game) we would create eight, nine or 10 open chances, I wouldn't think that is possible. From all the chances we got, we only scored one goal,” said Dutchman Slot.

“It's almost impossible to win a big game of football with a negative set-piece balance.

“We conceded another one today that led to us losing the game.”

The 2-1 loss to Manchester United leaves Liverpool four points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal.
