Three African football powerhouses, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Gabon, will join forces with Nigeria in a playoff tournament in Morocco next month, vying for a spot in the World Cup. Despite not topping their respective groups, these teams will compete for one of the last two World Cup places.

The Road to the World Cup

The four teams will play two semi-finals on November 13, followed by a deciding match three days later. The winner will advance to the intercontinental playoff in March, where they'll compete for a World Cup spot. Nigeria, ranked 45th in the FIFA rankings, is expected to face Gabon (79), while Cameroon (52) takes on DR Congo (60).

CAF Playoff and World Cup Qualification

The four best runners-up in the African World Cup qualifying groups, which include Cameroon, DR Congo, Gabon, and Nigeria, will compete in the CAF playoff semi-finals on November 13. The winner of the playoff final, scheduled for November 16, will advance to the inter-confederation playoff in March 2026.

The inter-confederation playoff will feature six teams from different regions, with the African playoff winner joining teams from Asia, Oceania, South America, and North and Central America. The teams will be ranked according to the FIFA Men's World Ranking, with the top two teams seeded directly into the final round.

Based on the expected FIFA rankings for October 23, the African playoff pairings will likely pit Nigeria, ranked 45th, against Gabon, ranked 79th, as the highest-ranked team faces the lowest-ranked. In the other semi-final, Cameroon, ranked 52nd, will take on DR Congo, ranked 60th, with the teams expected to maintain their current positions.

Africa's Heavyweight Contenders Get a Second Chance

These matchups are part of the African playoffs, scheduled to take place in Morocco from November 13 to 16. The winners of the semi-finals will advance to the final on November 16, with the ultimate winner proceeding to the inter-confederation playoffs in March 2026 for a chance to qualify for the World Cup.

The calculation for the four best runners-up was complex, requiring results against the last-placed team in each group to be excluded. This was due to one group having five participants, unlike the others with six. Until the last day of qualifiers, the top four runners-up remained uncertain.

Nigeria secured their spot among the best runners-up after scoring a fourth goal against Benin, edging out Burkina Faso by a single goal. This outcome determined the final lineup for the playoff tournament.

Nigeria's Strong Finishing in World Cup Qualifiers

Nigeria's qualifying campaign may have been underwhelming, but the Super Eagles showed resilience with a strong finish, highlighted by Victor Osimhen's impressive hat-trick in their final match. This late surge has boosted their confidence as they head into the playoffs.

Challenges for Cameroon and DR Congo

Cameroon, once a formidable force, is currently facing internal turmoil. The team's government-appointed coach, Marc Brys, is embroiled in a heated dispute with federation president Samuel Eto'o, which may affect their performance. Meanwhile, DR Congo, who qualified for the World Cup over 50 years ago as Zaire, had a promising run in their group but lost momentum after Senegal staged a remarkable comeback to take the top spot in Group B.
