Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has received a one-match touchline ban and an £8,000 fine for misconduct during the Premier League game against Liverpool. Maresca was sent off in the 96th minute after celebrating Chelsea's winning goal with excessive enthusiasm, earning him a second yellow card from referee Anthony Taylor.
Maresca admitted to the charge and accepted the standard penalty. As a result, he'll miss Chelsea's next Premier League game against Nottingham Forest on Saturday. Although banned from the touchline, Maresca can still watch the game from the stadium and communicate with his team via phone or other means.
The Italian manager described his celebratory actions as an “instinctive reaction” after the win. Despite the ban, Maresca will be allowed to enter the dressing room before kickoff, at halftime, and after the match. Willy Caballero, Maresca's assistant and former Chelsea goalkeeper, will likely lead the team from the technical area in his absence.
“It was alleged that the manager acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour during the fixture, which led to his dismissal around the 96th minute,” the FA said in a statement.
