Italian second seed Jasmine Paolini made a thrilling comeback to defeat Belinda Bencic, the Tokyo Olympic gold medalist, with a score of 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 in the Ningbo Open quarterfinals on Friday. This win keeps her chances of qualifying for the WTA Finals alive. Paolini will now face Elena Rybakina, the third seed, in the semifinals.

Elena Rybakina had a dominating performance against Ajla Tomljanovic, winning 6-2, 6-0 in under an hour. This victory not only propelled her to the semifinals but also kept her own hopes of qualifying for the WTA Finals intact. Rybakina, a former Wimbledon champion, has had an impressive year with 50 wins and seven semifinal appearances.

The match between Paolini and Bencic was a marathon that lasted three hours and 22 minutes, making it the longest match of Paolini's season. Despite serving for the match at 5-4 in the second set, Bencic couldn't close out the win and eventually succumbed to Paolini's determination. Paolini praised Bencic, saying she was an amazing player and a very good person.

In the semifinals, Paolini will face Rybakina, and a win would keep her qualification hopes alive.
