Mjallby AIF, a team from a small coastal town in Sweden, has made history by winning the Allsvenskan title, their first major trophy. The team from Hallevik secured the championship with three rounds to spare after a 2-0 victory over IFK Goteborg.


The Numbers Behind the Triumph

Mjallby's achievement is remarkable, with the team accumulating 69 points, a new Allsvenskan record. They have won 21 games, drawn 6, and lost only 1 out of 28 matches. The team's defense has been impressive, conceding just 18 goals in 28 matches, with goalkeeper Noel Tornqvist registering 12 clean sheets.

Mjallby had won zero major trophies before the 2025 season. Their most recent notable finish was in 2023 when they were beaten 4-1 by Hacken in the Svenska Cupen final.

Aksum's Coaching Background
Karl-Marius Aksum had zero senior coaching experience before joining Mjallby as an assistant coach in January 2024. He holds a PhD in visual perception in elite football and has introduced a “scanning” method that has transformed Mjallby's play in possession.


Mjallby's sole league defeat occurred away at AIK on May 11, where they initially took the lead but ultimately lost 2-1.


Only two first-team regular players, Ludvig Thorell and Axel Noren, joined the club at the start of the season or during the campaign and have played over 500 minutes in the league, indicating Mjallby's reliance on their existing squad.


Mjallby secured the league title with three matches to spare after a 2-0 win over IFK Goteborg, which gave them an 11-point lead after 27 rounds of fixtures 


Mjallby has been remarkably consistent this season, often winning games by small margins. Their biggest win of the season came in April when they beat Degerfors 4-1, scoring four goals for the first time in 2025.


Before this season, Mjallby's highest finish in the Swedish top flight was fifth place, achieved in 2020 and 2024.


Despite leading the league, Mjallby's top scorers are Herman Johansson and Abdoulie Manneh, each with seven league goals. Johansson also leads the team in assists with a notable number of game-changers.


Only nine years ago, Mjallby faced a dire situation, needing a win on the final day of the 2016 season to avoid relegation to the fourth tier of Swedish football, which would have likely led to bankruptcy.


Mjallby has been impressive on the road this season, winning 11 of their 14 away matches, drawing two, and losing only one. This has earned them 35 points away from home, compared to 34 points at Strandvallen.


Anders Torstensson began his first spell in charge of Mjallby 12 years after starting his senior coaching career. Between his stints at MAIF, he worked as a school headteacher and coached other clubs, including Karlskrona.


Despite gaining an additional point away from home, Mjallby AIF remains unbeaten in 14 matches at Strandvallen this season, with 10 wins and 4 draws.


Mjallby AIF has made history by becoming the 16th unique club to win the Allsvenskan title and the fourth club in the 21st century to secure their maiden win in the league.


Mjallby's defense has been exceptional, conceding just 18 goals in 28 matches, which is nine fewer than any other team in the division. They have also scored 51 goals, the second-best return in the league. Goalkeeper Noel Tornqvist has played every minute and registered 12 clean sheets.


Mjallby has gone 20 games without a loss in the Allsvenskan since their sole league defeat, winning 16 matches and drawing four during this period.


Mjallby has secured 21 wins so far in their title-winning season, accompanied by six draws and one loss in 28 games.


Mjallby's previous record points total was achieved in the 2024 season when they reached 50 points for the first time in the club's history.


With their 2-1 win over Norrkoping, Mjallby set a new Allsvenskan points record of 69, surpassing the records set by Malmo in 2010 and AIK in 2018.


Mjallby can still reach a maximum of 75 points if they win their final two games against Varnamo and Hacken.


Mjallby AIF was formed 85 years ago in 1939 through a merger between local sides Listers IF and Halleviks IF. The club has played its home games at Strandvallen since its inception.


The village of Hallevik, home to Strandvallen, has a population of approximately 800 people. The nearby town of Mjallby has around 1,250 residents, while the larger Solvesborg Municipality, which the club represents, has a population of about 17,500.


Strandvallen, Mjallby's home stadium, has a capacity of 7,000 and has regularly sold out this season as the team defied expectations. Interestingly, Cherrywood Road, the stadium of Farnborough FC in the sixth tier of English football, has a larger capacity.


In 2016, Mjallby faced financial turmoil with debts of approximately £350,000, putting the club at risk of going out of business. However, a revamp of the business model has led to significant improvements, with the club now boasting an annual turnover of £2.3m.


According to Transfermarkt, Mjallby's entire squad is valued at €16.85m, making them the ninth most valuable team in the Allsvenskan. This valuation is lower than that of Bolton Wanderers, a team playing in England's third-tier League One.
